No, still can't find this track interesting. There are a few nice keyboard flourishes and guitar parts towards the end but other than that, a pretty average affair. Chocolate Box Ok, I'm bracing myself for the abuse and shouts of "You're kidding!?", but (he says looking sheepish and guilty) I kinda like it (barrage of stones now being thrown my way). I think it might be because every time I hear it I imagine 'Forest Gump' dancing along to it! If you take it as being a cheesey tongue-in-check track that P did as a joke it's actually kinda fun(ny). Dance 4 Me I'm liking the slightly 'oriental' synth motif. The way he sings/speaks seems reminiscent of Poom Poom to my ears. Pardon the pun but "I like it". U're Gonna C Me Still unsure whether this is an unnecessary reworking of a perfectly good song. I guess P thought he needed another ballad for the album to go with 'Better With Time'. It might grow on me. Here Another catchy little synth/keyboard motif. This is seriously going to kill my cool ratio, but I like the pleasant uplifting feel of this song - ok, it's a bit sappy and twee, but it works for me (although I also inexplicable like the 'OTT uplifting histrionic' Saviour from Emancipation so what do I know). Valentina From this day forward will be known to me as P's MILF song. Am I the only one wanting to sing "Hey Macarena" instead of Valentina? Like the 'Miami Vice' like Synth line and the guitar work towards the end, but not a particularly inspired track. Better With Time Meh. Maybe it will grow on me. Ol' Skool Company I think this will probably work better as a live track. P hijacks Obama's "change we can believe in" and turns it into a "heaven we can believe in" - oh how droll you are P. Someone else mentioned the "50c style synth" and I know exactly what they mean - P obviously liked 50c's 'In Da Club'. No More Candy 4 U Lyrically, not great, but an interesting 'sound' - certain parts keep reminding of me of 'Daddy Pop'. Overall: Much better than I expected... but then I was expecting an abomination. who asked u copy my right infringer from Ireland... couldn't say it with fotoschopp, ey

Alright, here's an honest review from a self-imposed Hater that will cough up 11.98 + tax on Sunday and not a penny more.
(There’ll Never B) Another Like Me - Loving it! Through and through. That's the Prince, I want to remember. Chocolate Box - Hated it! Dance 4 Me - Camille!!!! Bitch, where you been, how you been doing? This is what earned my money! U’re Gonna C Me - Hated it! Here - Hated it! Valentina - Hated it! Better with Time - Hated it! Ol’ Skool Company - It's Camille and the Prince I want to remember, damn it! Loving it! No More Candy 4 U - Loved the vibe, just ain't feeling the funk! I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Alexandernvrmind said: Spanky said: The Time used words like "sho'ty"? For the record, I fucking LOVE MPLSoUND, the record is hot. My criticism is the ONLY thing that pulls me out of the flow, but it is a small thing--like I said, the record is H.O.T. Let's be fair though, give me the most urban, street, funk ass lyric from a Time song and we will go from there. I'm waiting. Dude stop letting hip hop shape what your idea of what urban is. Also lets face it your use of the term Urban is just a code word for black. Prince is plenty urban ok. Not trying to be combative I just don't like the fact that I think you are buying into how hip hop defines that. By the way I saw your comments regarding the fact that you like the disc... so do I. Thats not the issue I was raising. I'm 42 and when I was growing up here in DC sho'ty was a common saying and still is among black read urban males my age. Hes not trying to be urban... he is urban.... and that is a common word used in the black community as for the Time... of the top of my head immediately the song Release It from Graffitti Bridge comes to mind. Morris Day uses the term "Stella" which in the urban (read black) community is a term for a fine a$$ woman. Now that is just immediately off the top of my head I was specifically using "urban" because to use the word "black" would assume that only black people are from urban neighborhoods. As there are whites, mexicans, blacks and everything in between found in urban 'hoods across America, to say black would be generalizing and possibly offensive. Growing up in a city as diverse as DC I would hope you know that first hand. I agree that when he had the Time as an outlet he was able to write the more Urban/R & B cuts and use Morris to voice them. So you do have a point. Once the Time disbanded and he had to be the voice for all of his points of view, he started making more records on the hip-hop tip and maybe it's just me but he misfires with these tracks more often than not. I wish u heaven

I think this project was the EXACT thing Prince needed to do. Prince fans have different taste in what they want him to do. He released 2 totally different albums here.
Me personally, I love them both but I am frickin' all over MPLS, funky funky funky!!! Lotus is great but I think it will grow even more paisleypark4 said: NouveauDance said: TNBALM - bind it with a spell of silence, put a hex on it, call an exorcist and kill it with fire.
Chocolate Box - Prince continues to try and play catch-up with last seasons trends in chart-impacting pop/R&B with his take on 'My Humps', etc. I think there's a level of Hell in Dante's Inferno where some poor souls are forced to listen to this for all eternity. No doubt I'm heading there myself if I don't eat my greens. This song isnt as good as the instrumental to me, but its koo. You making it sound like my reaction to Chaos & Disorder Dance 4 Me - Urgh, is this really only track 3? I've already had more than enough.... would slot on NPS in between the title track and Freaks On This Side. You must be Yanni or Enya because those are TWO WAY different tracks!!!! Ol' Skool Company - Sped-up vocal takes the edge of another drippy hip-hop influenced R&B drawl. Reminded me of 'When Will We Be Paid' (which is a much better track). U just so silly it's cute!! No More Candy 4 U - Silly and throwaway. Overall: basically once you've heard the first 20 seconds of a track, you've heard everything they have to offer. I haven't given the album a thorough listen, I've just listened to it once all the way through and a few tracks I've listened to again...
But here are my first impressions: The tracks I'd heard before (Chocolate Box, Never be Another) don't really excite me that much, although Chocolate Box is better in its full version with the Q-tip rap... Dance 4 Me is very very cool.... I also like the old-school (no pun intended) feeling of "Old Skool Company"... I'm not feeling the ballads... maybe they'll grow on me with repeated listenings... I love the quirkyness of "No more Candy for U"... It really does remind me of something from Controversy ("Ronnie Talk Russia" in parts)... I'm kinda on the fence about "Valentina"... It certainly is catchy but the beginning of the song sounds like you're listening to a ... ehm.... Lil' Wayne song! I guess it's the synth line and the slight auto-tune I think I'm hearing that gives that "Lollipop" with Linn drums feeling. So all in all, it's a really mixed bag... I will give it a better listen later though... Maybe some of the tracks that don't stand out immediately will get "better with time".

Alexandernvrmind said: Spanky said: "HERE" is his greatest ballad of the last 5 years. Period.
The last moment of "Better With Time" from the build up of the final verse ("When the hair that frames that face...") and on to the end is, how do you say, transcendent. I am in the middle of "Ol'Skool Company". For me the only disappointment about this whole record is in this track as well as the first three. It is when Prince tries to be "Urban", using words like "da man", "sho'ty", "power to the people", "suckas" the fact that he is naming a song "Ol'Skool", this is where he misfires IMHO. I am glad he is at least using the sped up voice for this track, and I know the MPLSoUND is his Black Album for the new milenium, so it is a small thing. But he can still groove that LINN-1 Drum machine. Got one more track to go, Prince. Ooops, "No More Candy 4U" is playing--this track fucking ROCKS! Chalk one up for the Kid. dude c'mon you think Prince wrote all that music for himself and the Time and isn't urban? He is Old School and using old school terminology. He is being himself. What did you want him to say Fuckas!! He said Suckas because thats what 50 year old black men say. Prince trying to sound urban? You guys are so funny yeah come on, what u honsestly think prince isn't urban? Well he is, he's not trying to be anything, he's just going back to his ol skool roots.

NouveauDance said: herb4 said: That explains a lot because I loathe those first 3 albums and only like about half of the other 2. I guess we just have different tastes. I read your "LotusFlow3r" review and I think that was the first really positive thing I've read that you wrote (and now I'm worried). Hope you don't think I was picking on you. I'm looking forward to hearing these records Sunday. I've said a lot of positive stuff about Prince's music, it's just people tend to remember when I write about something I don't like, probably because I enjoy hyperbole, and they get a knot in their knickers about it, completely bypassing the nudge in their ribs I'm also giving that apparently goes completely over their heads. True all dat. Probably it's also because that every time I see a thread about a song I like, I post in it because I love it and you post in it because you hate it (and vice versa). That's the only time I see your post(s), and since we mostly disagree on what we enjoy from Prince, everything I read that you write comes off as negative. I'm still not entirely convinced you like to dance though. What are your top five favorite Prince dance songs off the top of your head?

I post this after every new Prince release since I've been here.
People Prince's music is like fine wine it gets better with age. In 84 I bought Purple Rain and listened to it once until the movie hit a month later. I still listen to it once a week now. In 87 I HATED Sign in the 1st month it was out. Then about week 5 the thing hit me and I understood what was going on. Lovesexy was an album I did not fully understand until 10 years after it was released. A new favorite is COME. I only liked two songs in 1994. Now the CD is the jam. I don't bash people who don't like the music that he is doing right now because in 5 years it will be a neo-classic. Enjoy while you can.
