Classic Prince Moment: James Brown concert in '83

I downloaded the James Brown concert from 1983, when he invited both Michael Jackson and Prince on stage. I LOVED Prince's entrance, riding on his body guard's back. I was dying. But the thing that makes me hella mad is that the whole thing I downloaded has NO SOUND .Completely mute. Oh well at least I get to see it. Have any of you seen it?? My mom told when it came on they acknowledged Michael's performance but not Prince's. I love Micheal but Prince is just as good. To me thats like a historic moment.

I've heard this is what instigated the recording of Tricky.

I don't think this is one of Prince's proudest moments. MJ comes up there and is really cool and classy and sings a little with JB. Then Prince comes up and rips his shirt off and it kind of looks like he is trying to steal the show. I think he just got a little carried away and it just didn't come off very well. Then he left and was swinging a little on that lampost and totally knocked it over into the crowd...lol...I bet he winces when he remembers that "appearance", but sh*t happens and you can't always be at your best, especcially in an impromptu appearance like that.

2 things to mention.

1) It doesn't have any sound because you don't have the correct audio codec.

2) Ever heard of using the search function ? this is at least the 5th thread on this same lame topic.

its funny when Prince throws his glove into the crowd,
and they throw it back.
He pure kicks ass on that guitar though
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

I'm not sure that it's one of Prince's "better" moments. He doesn't kick ass on guitar, he barely plays a couple of riffs... He was, all in all very uncomfortable to be there. When he's not in control he tends to be extremely shy. This is probably the reason we don't see him doing a lot of impromptu appearances on stage... one of his most incredible appearances is of course on the Sheila E concert doing Love Bizarre but that was scripted and every second rehearsed. Prince when not in the confines of total control doesn't seem to be very natural.

It is interesting though that it's Jackson that insists on having him come on stage. It seemed that James Brown barely knew who Prince was at that time.

Browzer i dont think Prince came across as uncomfortable,or "extremely shy".
he seemed to get into the swing of it quite quickly.
What does disapoint me about him going on stage is the fact that he chose only to scream into the mic, rather than sing!
thats my opinion anyway!

Well put Browzer! I totally agree with you. Every time I see that performance, I find myself wincing on behalf of Prince. Here was his chance to have his so called "one-on-battle" with Michael Jackson, and he clearly gets (1) outclassed (2) outperformed and (3) embarassed. I'll be honest, I don't ever show that tape to any of my friends when I try to impress on them Prince's talents.

lol And I've got to agree with you on that one. I don't show that to anyone, but for nostalgia's sake, just to illustrate how far back the "thing" between MJ and P goes. In his attempt to get into the groove of the moment, his scream alone didn't outshine MJ. His ability to just jump on the guitar and play a couple of riffs did show his ability to add something to the jam session. It's no surprise to me how the audience reacted to MJ vs. P. Unlike P, MJ was already well known by then in the music industry. I bet they didn't forget him after the lamppost incident.

According to Alan Leeds, and I getting this info from Okayplayer.com around the time he was D'Angelo's tour manager for Voodoo. Tricky was indeed about JB.

Oh..someone on amp said a while ago-"Just read Days of Wild, and thought it was interesting that this song was a
good natured song about George Clinton, he inspired some great songs Erotic City and We Can Funk both recorded within 2 days of each other." ever since I thought it was george. I had previously thought it was about rick james at the time.

and that toss salad hairdo and gold tooth seemed to fit George...maybe he made that since he had a few months earlier he had been embarassed at the JB concert then.

I finally saw the whole thing. Man, yes it one of those flinch moments. I couldn't help but laugh though. I dont know if he was drunk or high or whatever but he did seem a lil off. Whatever it was I believe he stopped. No matter what its still a classic moment...just a bad one.

Okayplayer? Pfft. Days Of Wild says it's about George Clinton, and as much info as Per got out of Alan Leeds through research, I have a feeling this tidbit also came from Leeds. Therefore I deduct that the song is about George Clinton.

I agree. I don't know why people get so anal about people bringing up the same thing. Not all orgers are here day and night and know what has been bought up and sometimes none of us automatically thin 'oh let me use the search function' . . .
