The Vault (Old Friends 4 Sale)

This album rules, cant stop listening to it lately even though Ive had it for years. True its a dirty warners album but its got some great cuts. 'She spoke to me' reminds me a lot of the vast musical changes involved in TRC.

Anyone dig this rarely mentioned album??

God bless

Lewis

The only negative thing about it is that it's TOO DAMN SHORT
but other than that, it's a very nice album.

A bit sorry tho that he put a different version of Sarah on
there. The original featured a bit more guitar instead of
synth. But I guess this version does fit in better with the
rest of the songs on the album.

I thought the title alone was spiteful.

You can interperet "old friends 4 sale" more or less like WB and Ps former relationship when they used to get along, and how they are now putting some of his remaining music out like a garage sale.

Prince sort of slammed the album on his site a couple years ago, so it may be that some fanatics don't want to praise something that Prince wasnt happy about.

Yeah, I just popped it in...gotta admit, it's my favorite of the unholy-trinity: Come, Chaos and Vault...but in the end, it's another forgetable album from a very forgetable period (except Gold/Exodus-My favorite). Like the other two albums in this trilogy of the damned, some good songs -- but it lacks any GREAT song though, good background music -- nothing much more...but that's just my opinion.

Argh, No!!! Come isn't a part of that deal. It's comprised
of songs from the Ulysses project, which also spawned 2/3
of The Gold Experience. The songs were shifted between the
two discs various times. It's an 'album' allright, and not
just a collection, a grab-bag of songs.

I'm not even sure wether Chaos & Disorder is exactly that,
since it's been discussed by Prince himself even and a few
members of the npg that it was recorded during a week's
holiday. Just to test themselves and see if they could do
it. [record an entire album in one week].

To me, only "The Vault" is really just a bunch of songs
which were never meant to comprise an album. Hence the
inclusion of "5 Women" and "Old Friends 4 Sale" and the
tracks from "I'll Do Anything".

But, as it happens, this does sound like a cohesive album.
Which just goes to show you what Prince could manage to do
if he ever decided to open the floodgate and let that vault
overflow.

Come is most definatly included in this most unholy-of unholy trinities...I'm sorry. It was released with a take it or leave it - f--k you attitude that Prince also had with Chaos and Vault...it was also the first time I'd ever bought a Prince album and was dissapointed by what I heard and saw (i.e.--the packaging). His heart wasn't in it, and it was released and created to just suppliment his contract...nothing more. The original version of the album was better, though it lacked the title song. If you like it, great (someone has too) but I'm afraid it definatly goes under the catagory of another contract filler -- nothing more. I wouldn't put Gold into that because his heart was in it when he created it, he just abandoned it by the time WB got around to releasing it...but the album was still very well created. Come, Chaos and Vault are throw-aways that he sold to WB (and to us) to escape his "slavery", nothing more.

I guess you're right. I'm just in denial since "Come" was
one of the last great Prince albums to me personally. Up
until "The Truth" it was getting by on very little indeed.

As long as you like it, who cares how and why it was released. I'm envious, I wish I liked it half as much as you obviously do. It's got a few fun tracks though...

"When the Lights Go Down" is one of my all-time favorites. I enjoy "The Vault" -- more than "Rave" or "NewPowerSoul," in any case.

Oh, and at least I can understand why you like Come...think about it this way, there's actually some poor basterd out there who thinks New Power Soul is a work of genius...now that's someone with serious issues... compared to that album, Come is the Citizen Kane of Prince records!

I agree; it's 2 short! The ecstasy doesn't last long enough!!! It would be nice 2 see these songs in fuller versions or then replaced with some of those other gems still sitting idle in the Paisley vaults.

But then I ain't sayin' anything y'all haven't thought 100 times urselves!

Peace & Love...always.

The photo on the cover of the Come album is gorgeous. I just dont think the CD case did it justice, far too small.

When The Lights Go Down is the joint.

Imagine if The Vault were a bootleg with slightly choppy sound quality. I think many more people would be cooing over it as one of those really good stand out boots. But becuase its an official release, perhaps we take it for granted.

Agreed Come was a worthy Prince album and actually got me back into Prince after IMO the really disappointing four albums that proceeded it. The Vault is great to put on when the mood suits me and is agreeable without being spectacular, i like it though. Chaos i don't care for though as it's too messy.
