And for the record, "these people" would be several of my music appreciating friends (some of whom don't even like Prince), Steve Jones, several industry insiders, and myself; a lifelong fan who thinks he's missed the mark more than he's hit it over the past several years. OK, maybe worried isn't the right choice of words, but my point is that debating Prince's choice of singles at this point in his career seems like a waste of time. He's not going to get significant airplay whatever he chooses. And it won't really effect the success of the project either way. Here's what matters: the Leno appearances, the Target ad and, belive it or not, the little mentions he's been getting on gossip sites and in Rolling Stone, Time, Billboard, etc., lately. Those are the things that are going to get the casual fan to pick up the albums.

Not releasing any singles at all will have the same effect on the success of these albums. And again, I'm personally excited about this albums (and am hoping for a leak soon), but to think that Prince is gonna get significant radio play in 2009 is just silly. Whats so different about 2009 when he had significant radio play during Musicology? I think the difference is that Musicology was an awesome, upbeat, fun and funky song and thus much more radio (and club) friendly. Crimson and Clover is a half-decent cover of a fairly dull and torpid tune which will have little appeal outside of his current fanbase, irrespective of how its music video turns out. Unless he's planning to release 3 singles simultaneously as well, I'd be much more interested in seeing him release something off MPLSound on its own.

Interesting
I sent the 4 new songs to my guitar teacher (who doesnt like Prince much) and his fave track was ´Crimson and Clover´. The song is indeed very catchy, easy to remember. And his guitar sounds good there too. If the video and promotion are good, it can be a good choice for a single.

And I honestly dont have many hopes of a Prince hit in the teeenager/mainstream audience that buys Justin and Beyonce. Maybe he should target the more mature audiences.

I always said the samething....BUT I would have to admit that he did alright with Musicology. Yes and no. The first two singles from Musicology were good choices. Both were commercially successful in one form or another. However, his final choice - Cinnamon Girl - was a terrible one. Personally, I liked the song; but its subject matter kept it from getting either video or radio airplay and he hasn't really recovered on radio since.

That is an interesting perspective, yet sometimes I see the fact that a lot of today's younger music listeners will buy Prince's music later on in their lives. Just like I want to buy older musicians that may have passed away... I believe that Prince will continue to sell his music forever. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

exactly... some people act like its still 1985. None of these songs are going to get heavy radio rotation. Doesn't mean that he can't move a lot of albums and more impoartantly the albums are solid all the way through I want a Prince record that I can play the whole way through and not just 2 or 3 songs and the rest stuff that I am embrassed to play Dance... Let me see you dance

Well, he didn't promote anything off of PE, but FBM made Top 40 in Hip-Hop/R&B, so I'm not sure I'd say that. Change it one more time..

Ballerina Misty Copeland just finished shooting the lead role in the Prince's 4thcoming Crimson & Clover video shoot. Word is she did an amazing job (this was her first shoot).. we can hardly wait 2 c the finished video!
A clip for "Crimson & Clover", eh? I was gonna say that there is no such thing as a purple bird, but... maybe there is some validity to your story here.

I would have to agree. Crimson and Clover is the best Prince cover... IMO not the BEST...Creep is the best but that wouldn't get much airplay. Besides, who listens to the radio anymore anyway? XM maybe. It's all about what's going to get him the most play on the internet.

Great news, "Crimson & Clover" got a very positive reaction so it was probably the right choice.
I'm sure many here would have reacted worse if the video was for "Chocolate Box".
