Prince at Conga Room - Best Concert of My Life

Very quickly and to the point. For all my years working in entertainment, there really was only one person I had never met/or never had seen perform.

Prince. The only one.

Of course, of those individuals I cared to see perform, that goes without saying. But Prince was the only person. And when it comes to Prince, he’s one of those who rarely tours and if you do get to see him, it’s in some basketball arena with 17,000 other people and you’re lucky if you’re within one half mile of the musical genius. Last night I was within spitting distance of him (as was everybody else.) Once in a lifetime opportunity.

ONCE in a lifetime.

Last night Prince performed in front of maybe…maybe 600 people in a club (The Conga Room) not much larger than a small movie theater. Like the venue same says, The Conga Room is just that…a ROOM. I’ll save all of the flowery rhetoric for another day. Here are some of the unforgettable highlights

* Sheila E. was called on-stage and gave an IMPROMTU performance of The Glamorous Life just because the band started playing it out of nowhere and the crowd begged her.

* Dr. Cornel West and Dr. Michael Eric Dyson got up on stage and did The Robot while Prince performed Hollywood Swinging by Kool & the Gang.

* Dr. Julianne Malveaux took it upon herself to climb on to the stage and gave professional go-go dancers a run for their money. Well, that’s not fair…maybe amateur ones. (Just kidding Dr. Malveaux…but you were seriously groovin’ up there.)

* 600 people doing The Bird as Prince performed not one but TWO Morris Day and the Time hits, Jungle Love the other.

* 600 people singing the end to Purple Rain as Prince conducted and strummed on his guitar. OOOOO HOOOOO OOOOO OOOOO….(you know the part).

* 600 people literally jumping straight up and down in place while Prince broke out Play that Funky Music by Cherry.

* Prince changed his musical set and abruptly started into 1999 saying instead we’re gonna party like it’s “2009.”

* The overall show sounded more like a rock/blues concert as he had a blues harpist playing on most of the songs with him. And yes it sounded good.

A friend who also attended the concert emailed me the set list and order for the evening. Here it is…

Ol’ School Company

Dreamer

Everyday People (Prince dedicated it to Jesse Jackson in attendance)
Play that Funk Music
1999
Shhh
Musicology
Bridge Over Troubled Water
When Will we Be Paid
Cream
U Got the Look
The Bird
Jungle Love
The Glamourous Life (Sheila E.)
I Feel For You (Sheila E. on background vocals)
Controversy

Purple Rain

As I remember more, I’ll share more. But that definitely was one crossed off the bucket list. You must see Prince perform live before you leave up out of here…

Hands down, best concert I’ve ever been to…and it’s not even close. I feel sorry for the younger generation today (as per usual). They just don’t know how good musically and in an artistic sense my generation had it. The man is 51 years old and still rocking the house.

Isn't it funny? All the haters that whine "Play something new! Quit playing covers! Wahhhhh!!! Waaahhhhh!!!!! Waaaaahhhhh!!!!"

And then contrast that with the people who actually went to the show. They usually say something like this:

Hands down, best concert I’ve ever been to…and it’s not even close.

Or this:

Review coming later, Im spent, Im elated, In damn near purple done.

this was an insane evening
somebody up there likes me--
thank you god...love rdhull aka "the freak"

Or this:

And then he left the stage, never to return. We were so mesmerized, many of us in the front remained there even when the canned music came on. Clearly the show was over, but somehow we wanted more. And with Prince, you never know if he'll come back for the 1,999th encore. But he didn't, which was fine. We had received more than we had imagined tonight. For me, it was well worth the trip.

I will never forget this show, this moment. Never.

Get on the boat, people!

It's amazing isn't it? Covers be damned, the man STILL puts on an INCREDIBLE show and if he wanted to sing nothing but stuff from the phone book and nursery rhymes, it would STILL kick serious ass because the man still has that passion and energy when he's on that stage. I hope that any fan in here who still hasn't seen Prince on stage will get the opportunity in the near future. It's a MUST that you see how incredible the man is. He's STILL pure FIRE!
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that
