in the terrible event of...(prince's will) What do we know / think will happen to music in the vault in the event prince passes on (obviously in about another 50 years).
He must have given huge thought to this...but given the control he's always exerted, who would he trust to approve granting of rights etc and to preserve the legacy? Will we get our hands on everything??? Or will it be destroyed?? I don't mean to be morbid...I am talking YEARS into the future...in which case the answer is probably prince's lovely wife and 17 children....but in the interim, what does the will say NOW?

Prince is such a control freak that I would be positively shocked if he hasn't already made written plans to ensure nothing in his vault ever gets released when he dies. [Edited 1/15/09 16:15pm] The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I would believe that Prince would have time 2 slowly go through all of the material that He has kept and save what was meaningful and possibly destroy material that Prince thought was private... "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

[While some people feel quite comfortable discussing Prince's demise, we'd like to concentrate on the fact that he's very much alive and very much into making music that we all look forward to.
This topic has come up before, and there's no problem wondering just what the hell is in that vault, or if we'll ever hear of it. Keep your responses on topic and with respect, or this thread will go the way of Tamar's career. Thank you, June7] |

I saw the title and my heart sank at the thought
Who does Prince trust enuff to put his vault in their hands if/when he goes to sleep? (I used 'sleep' so I can feel better) Will he even want the contents of his vault to be released? I sure hope so and I strongly feel so too. I swear the words "HATER" is wayyy over-rated...smh

It's a sad and morbid, yet very interesting and important question, which must have crossed his mind a million times.
I always liked to think Prince had about 50 albums ready that he still wants to release. Now, I don't think his entire vault will ever be up for release, but maybe some of it will. In the tragic event he would pass away too early, I hope the vault will not stay closed, but that he has a will stating exactly by whom, how and when his music must be released and who gets any profits. In any case the law and courts will settle the matter in the end if he hasn't arranged anything, but that could become extremely problematic and could lead to many legal battles preventing any new releases for a long time. I really do hope he has something arranged that ensures the world and his loyal fans of much more of his music and the right people the profits, while he is off to the afterworld. His talent, music and legacy deserve it. -- [Edited 1/18/09 9:40am]

In one of Prince's 90s interviews,he mentioned the possibility of having children and how they would "take care of things after I'm gone".Does anyone remember this interview? I know it's something we don't really want to think/talk about, but that interview proves that it has crossed his mind before.

Why? We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I've heard rumors before that he wants it destroyed. I can understand why he might wish to do that, and ultimately it's his decision. But of course that would be a huge loss; not just for his fans but for history. Imagine discovering a huge vault of previously unknown Mozart concertos, or if there was a room full of hundreds of unheard Beatles songs. Prince's legacy is secure, but his legend could only grow for generations to come if the vault were made available.
And financially, it's a goldmine for whomever/whatever charities/institutions he would want to leave the profits to. Think of it this way...imagine Prince has 600 songs in the vault (and it's probably waaaay more than that at this point). His estate could release a new 15 track album once a year, every year, for FORTY YEARS. Look at how posthumous releases have kept 2Pac and Jimi Hendrix relevant for years after their passing...Prince could be releasing new music to future generations for DECADES. Frankly, most of us would likely not live long enough to see all of that material released. Whether I ever get to hear it or not, I sincerely hope he doesn't destroy all that work. It's just so valuable...not just financially, but culturally and historically.

Nothing's stopping him from releasing the stores of vault material now while he's alive, and yet the tapes continue to deteriorate in the vault. If he doesn't care to release that material now, I'm sure he doesn't want the stuff released posthumously either. He probably already has orders for the destruction of vault material in the event of his death. "I Was FINE Back in the Day!"
