Fan's Favourite Tracks Ever : Poll

Hi Everyone,

Nice to be here - this is my first post - I just signed up.

Anyway....

As a pretty new fan of Prince, I just wanted to ask all of you long-time hardcore fans out there what your favourite tracks are. I have only bought Hits 1 and 2 so far, and want to know what to buy next. But the back catalogue is so massive, I can't afford everything - so have to pick and choose carefully!

Where should I start? What are everyone's favourite tracks?!?

Thanks for the help!

In no particular order, you definitely want to get up on:

  • Dirty Mind
  • Sign 'O' The Times
  • Diamonds And Pearls
  • Emancipation
  • prince

But really-really-really? You're gonna wanna eventually get everything, because with each song he goes out into so many different directions. That's sort of the wonder of Prince and his music. The only album I ever have a consistent problem with is "Chaos & Disorder". But even with that one, if somehow it gets slipped into my playlist without me knowing it, I find myself getting into it before I realize what it is.

The one thing I find most amazing about Prince's music is the production value. Listen to him with a set of good headphones if you can, that's the best way to appreciate Prince. You'll catch little things going on in the songs that you'd miss by just listening through a pair of speakers. The details that he puts into the smallest little parts always blows me away. Little intricate things in the timing and ambiance, I would kill to be allowed to just sit and watch him in the studio. They could tie my hands up and duct tape my mouth shut, I'd just want to watch his genius at work.

Anyway, enjoy the journey.

You will want most of them. I still haven't heard them all, stopped around Come and most of the mid to later 90s stuff.

What I did was first get Purple Rain, then the Hits 1&2 for the introduction. Then I got the newest one out at the time (Rave??).

After that though, I just started with his first album from '78, "For You", then worked my way up through the years chronologically, which I think is the best way to go really.

That being said, some of my favorite albums are

Prince
Dirty Mind
1999
Controversy
Purple Rain
Sign O the Times
Gold Experience

I would have to agree with PDOGZ line-up with 1 addittion. If you come across Crystal Ball, don't hesitate to buy it.

Top 5 Prince albums:

1.) Purple Rain
2.) Controversy
3.) Dirty Mind
4.) 1999
5.) Lovesexy

Get those and you're set for a fairly solid run. I recommend his entire collection, though. My all time favourite track is If I Was Your Girlfriend. No other song like it in the world.
Worlds most beloved Orger

I 2nd that motion! I would have suggested it, but thought it may have been a little deep for a newbie. But I agree; Crystal Ball is a must have and gives great insight into the mind of a genius.

I often wonder how much of Prince's genius people miss by not listening with headphones, I'm relieved to learn that others are up on it. nod
