Fan/Fam/True fan or fam/Fanatic/Purple Kool-Aid Drinker... All these terms! All these damn terms! OK...So am I just a fan if I don't like all Prince's hits? Am I a fam if I love all Prince's hits? Am I a purple kool-aid drinker if I agree with everything Prince does? Seriously, does every fan/fam here love all Prince's hits? There have been a few songs discussed here and the end result most times comes down to whether you're a true fan/fam if u like or don't like the song. There have been some songs discussed that ppl went gaga over and I listened to it, sometimes 5x over to really get it, but it doesn't impress me...so wat does that make me then? Wat was Prince's definition of his 'fams'? I swear the words "HATER" is wayyy over-rated...smh

JayJai said: Wat was Prince's definition of his 'fams'? Prince used 'fams' for 'fans' because he said that 'fans' was short for fanaticals and 'fams' was for family. A lot of people didn't like that because they don't consider 'fan'short for fanatical but just a word for someone who likes the music from a certain artist. And they ceratinly didn't want to be considered family. Nowadays 'fams' is used mainly for people who like really everything Prince says or does and defend everything he does or says. I do consider myself his family. I've followed him for a very long time. I've cried with him and laughed with him. When he's been through a painful time in his life, i've hurt with him and for him. And i don't agree with everything, but i do agree to disagree, but i will defend him to my death. I can talk about him when i'm upset about something he's done, but nobody else can or i will come to his defense. That's what family does. If I could be muse 2 the Pharoah......

I don't really see the point of all the pointin fingers "you're not a true fam and I'm a true fam cause I like this song or that song". It's only recently I seen this pop up and it's only somewhat recently I joined too. Back to my original question...care to answer? I swear the words "HATER" is wayyy over-rated...smh

I thought about doing a thread about the word "Fam" but this thread will do. If I had done a thread, it would've revolved around a question that I had about that word, so I want to ask this question now:
When did the word "Fam" become such a bad thing? Now I don't consider myself a fam because I don't own every single song that Prince has ever done and I don't agree with every single thing that he does but I won't knock anyone here who does. To me and this is just my opinion here, the word "Fam" seems to be used in almost a dergogatory way. It seems like a lot of fans look down on those people if that's who they deem those fans to be. They are the ones who use the terms "Purple Kool-Aid drinker" & then think they'll get some kind of normal dialogue going on with the same people and then those attacked call those fans "haters" for whatever reason and the bickering and arguing continues. It's riduclous. We're all here because we like the man and his music. Some more than others but I can't see why we have to make this such a big deal. All the name calling does is cause division and we don't need anymore of that in here. That's just my take on this issue. [Edited 2/20/09 8:03am] I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

u 4got one other term and i'm proud 2 say i am this one ...
diehard just so we're clear about this term - a die hard is someone that CAN b objective 2 the artist(s) output of material. a die hard sometimes is mistaken 4 being a "fam", "kool aid drinker", "fanatic" and "hater" , when the best terminology should b "realistic and objective" man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

For me, right from the get-go. Prince's grasp of linguistics and etymology has always been dubious at best and, during the '90s, he really let that show. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the word fan.

I am an ass kisser, ass licker, fanatic family member from a dysfunctional family, I hate on haters, I say nay to the nay sayers and gay to the lame sayers. I check Dr. Fb's site and I check out peoples myspace pages who check out peoples myspace pages. I watch the watchers and observe the blabbers and I am left with a dry mouth and some Kool Aid would be refreshing just as long it's not Purple. To Sir, with Love

Fan... Fam... whatever. Why does anyone really give a damn is beyond me.
I like what I like... I agree with some of Prince's actions... disagree with others. But the derogatory aspect of the terms comes from those who use it to describe other fans who dare to have their own mind... like they do. However, they choose to agree with Prince instead of disagree; like a song the 'haterz' dis-like, etc. It will never cease to amaze me how most of those who use the term in that deragory aspect... will literally have shrines in their home to Prince. They but every collectable. They own vinyl and cassettes. They will pay large amounts of money for imports. They save their ticket stubs from every concert they ever attended..... But will call some one else a fam. These people are ;'haterz' because it seams as if they cannot resist the urge to tear down some one else's joy at every corner.

A fan can own everything Prince ever made but still have no problem saying particular songs or albums sounded like shit because a fan is someone who has their own taste and a mind of their own.
A fam owns everything Prince ever made but will never admit to not liking particular songs or albums. If they find themselves not liking something Prince made, they will try to force themselves to like it by listening to it over and over until they do like it. They will also defend Prince to the very end whether it's his music or his personal statements or actions. They have no mind of their own. Their mind is Prince's mind and if they find themselves disagreeing with Prince on particular views, they will change their personal views to match Prince's. Andy is a four letter word.

Hmmm...
Respect the question but will never take the title he threw out in some random interview. Fam? Short for family? Nahhh, there is no way I would place him before any one in my family or consider him one. He thinks the same of me, I am very sure and not surprised or disapointed. Why would any one slap this title on them selves is beyond me? Are you saying he owns your thoughts or is above you? Yeah....if you let some rock star label you with out meeting you or knowing you. Fam? C'mon. He plays music, thats it.

I don't. And I've adored the man's entertainment all my life. Still not my family though. That's personal. "You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup...Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend." - Bruce Lee

I find this a little humorous and I say that because I've met a few people, yes a few or was it 2? Anyway, I've been told that about my love for P's music. I don't dictate my life based on every lyric sung or written about Prince. If that was the case then I'd be a JW and I'm not even close to being a [Neo] Christian, even thought Jesus [Nabi Isa] was a Jew.
I love his music and I love going to the concerts, it's fun. Do I drink the so called purple kool-aid, no, I do not ... Peace ... & Stay Funky ...
