I just don't know how seriously to take all this.

Over the past several months we've gotten some songs. I'm going back a year or so. There's been a song on Leno, songs on a radio station, songs on the new website. I can't even name it all. I'm sure someone's been keeping record of all this...doing the work...I guess.

I just don't know how seriously to take any of them. I don't know what to make of them or any of this.

Now, there's "new versions" and "instrumentals" of the songs we've kinda heard already?

It all seems so random. I don't mean to be mean or bitchy or anything, but are we getting his best or is he just tossing stuff out there? Is this his way of somehow including us in his musical process?

I'm lost. Your thoughts?

Absolutely, but I'm just bumping your thread more than anything because I'm finding it hard to care about any new Prince music. lol

lol A pity bump....I'll take it. batting eyes

I just got another piece of the puzzle from the thread about Bria's new song.

Someone posted...sorry don't remember exactly who...that they wanted to own the new material to play it when and where they want to.

I can't help but wonder if this is now not permitted in the "new universe"

As I posted on the thread, we're getting what he wants, when he wants and how he wants it. Makes it maybe impossible to incorporate it into your being, for utter lack of a better way to put it.

I feel no affinity for this material. The new universe seems a bit cold and impersonal.

nod I know what you mean. Surely Prince has got some scheme up his sleeve, but this past year has been so...random. I'm a little lost as to what he's trying to. confuse

Perhaps you're right though, and he's trying, in his way, to include us somewhat in the process. Or maybe he's been indecisive about what to do with the songs once he's worked on them. The guy does famously have scads of songs that have never, ever made an album's cut. shrug

Were those publicized in any "official" capacity or just new stuff in the boot community?
Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it.

That's just it. It's no wonder why people here don't enjoy the new stuff. We make them such gigantic events or whatever then it comes out and it's a disappointment. Prince didn't disappoint you, your expectations disappointed you. An image of what you thought Prince would do was different from what the truth really was. Prince didn't tell you to do or think like that! I'm not trying to be a prick or some ass-kisser saying this but I speak from experience. I don't do that type of thing anymore and I enjoy the new music because of that. I wish more people would do the same. There's a lot of peace of mind that comes with this.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Don't overthink it. Just accept what's given (with gratitude), listen to the music as it comes and draw your own conclusions. You'll be happier that way.

Heres the thing about Prince... I know this is a Prince site but you have to be critical of him sometimes, unless your a mindless sheep... given that said, the reason Prince does things like this is simple....the absence of a major label. People go nuts over that debate and deservedly so, and yes Prince is a musical genius and bla bla bla BUT HE DOESNT KNOW HOW TO PLAN. I promise you a majority of what he's saying is going to never actually happen and if some of you havent learned that by now its sad. Remember the poll on 3121.com? which country should he tour 1st? Never happened. Remember the Tamar album? Never happened. Prince is the type of person who becomes euphoric and thinks that he has all the answers and then suddenly changes his mind and loses interest. Just ask Mayte. Or Tamar. Or Robin Power. Or anyone hes ever worked with. The difference between now and the glory days is he doesnt have a major label to at least somewhat keep that randomness in check. He may think he knows what he wants but when it comes time to actually do it hes changed his mind 17 times by then. Now dont get me wrong Prince is my favorite artist and possibly the best musician Ive ever heard...but after years of seeing how he acts I think its safe to say he really doesnt plan what hes doing half the time and if he does its usually changed eventually.

its all been an experiment as far as i can tell...and mostly at cost or at his expense these past few years.

shrug I dont see what the big deal is, at least we are being kept in the loop, even if we dont fully understand what is going on.

My point is...so what?

The man owes us nothing. If he owes or owed anything to the three women you cite, that's between them. It's no business of yours or mine or anyone else's.

If his business model is wack - he's the one who bears the consequences of it. Have you ever worked in any kind of creative job? Do you have any idea how many plans and concepts are dropped at a moment's notice - without any kind of explanation, at all? I've worked for weeks and months on concepts, only to get into a meeting and have a mucky-muck say, "I don't like it. What else ya got?"

I'm working on a project right now for which I had a killer idea. Unfortunately, as we've moved forward, the idea I had is not dovetailing very well with our overall strategy. So I'm either going to have to change it radically or ditch it altogether. You know...sort of like Moonbeam Levels didn't make it onto 1999. Or Crucial didn't make it onto Sign 'o' the Times. Or like Prince couldn't get a label to distribute Tamar's album.

Just because you don't know Prince's plan doesn't mean he doesn't have one. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with turning on a dime. The fact that he continues to do so after so many years suggests that something about it works for him.

And when you get right down to it, he's the only one for whom it has to work. At this point in his career, he only has to please himself.
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
