Heres the thing about Prince... I know this is a Prince site but you have to be critical of him sometimes, unless your a mindless sheep... given that said, the reason Prince does things like this is simple....the absence of a major label. People go nuts over that debate and deservedly so, and yes Prince is a musical genius and bla bla bla BUT HE DOESNT KNOW HOW TO PLAN. I promise you a majority of what he's saying is going to never actually happen and if some of you havent learned that by now its sad. Remember the poll on 3121.com? which country should he tour 1st? Never happened. Remember the Tamar album? Never happened. Prince is the type of person who becomes euphoric and thinks that he has all the answers and then suddenly changes his mind and loses interest. Just ask Mayte. Or Tamar. Or Robin Power. Or anyone hes ever worked with. The difference between now and the glory days is he doesnt have a major label to at least somewhat keep that randomness in check. He may think he knows what he wants but when it comes time to actually do it hes changed his mind 17 times by then. Now dont get me wrong Prince is my favorite artist and possibly the best musician Ive ever heard...but after years of seeing how he acts I think its safe to say he really doesnt plan what hes doing half the time and if he does its usually changed eventually.

Billy Joel, Elton John, Sting and Paul Simon all produce music for major labels. Would you prefer these safe artistic choices? With all the craziness comes greater rewards.

Why care? Just take it for what it's worth and enjoy the songs as you hear them?

That's exactly what I was going to say.

Never in all my life have I heard so many people bitch about getting new music. The fuck is wrong with people? disbelief

Same thing that's the fuck wrong with people who sit ears and nose wide open to someone with their hand itching for their pocketbook. The same thing that's the fuck wrong with people who don't see a difference between the thought through projects of before and the random iffy stuff being dropped now.

Not everyone gets the value of 500 versions of one song. If this IS part of the process then cool, but if this is just crumbs, who needs that?

Crumbs from an artist that normally provides banquets is puzzling to me. If not to you, who the fuck cares?

If you aren't feeling it...then look someplace else! There's plenty of music to be heard. You can sit around and bitch about what you aren't getting from Prince...but you still walk away empty-handed. Find something you like and listen to it.

It is what it is. People get so deep into what this means or that, it's a lot more fun when you just accept what Prince does for what it is. I read stuff and some comments read like he owes people something. Accept it all how it appears and i think people would enjoy the music a lot more and maybe get it a lot more. Who knows!

Those of you who say "It is what it is" aren't really getting the gist of the thread. Sorry, but you're not.

This isn't my first tip toe into the purple garden, so the "Geez just listen to it to listen to it rolleyes ", for lack of a better word, advice, is hollow.

You know Prince’s new Cadillac?

I paid for it. Throughout the 1980s I bought every single record Prince released, including the imported 12”s and the VHS tapes, and as many concert tickets as I could afford. I was Prince’s salesman. I played his music on dancefloors and and to everyone I knew.

I’d say the motherfucker owes people like me a tiny bit of consideration. If he's going to ask me to subscribe to stream music videos made to promote his material in the first place I'm going to mock him.

Every one of us who's even just bought disc has been responsible for the life lil man now leads. Much, much lesser artists are infinitely more grateful to their fanbases than Her Highness is. Sure, he can do what he wants in that regard, but the more he "does what he wants", the more he's going to alienate even long-time supporters.

It's obvious he doesn't give a shit.

He can sell out arenas anywhere. It really doesn't to Prince matter if a few people on the internet don't like him anymore.

He's been doing what he wants to do, sometimes at the expense of fans since the begining.

The same people saying they'll never waste another dime on Prince are usually the first ones buying concert tickets or raving over a T.V. performance.

I did much the same - but he don't owe me a thing. I did it because I wanted to, which is pretty much why he does what he wants. Perhaps you would be happier if you did the same.

No, he doesn't. Everything you mentioned - "buying every single record Prince released, "subscrib[ing] to stream music videos, etc. - is a choice. Prince didn't ask you to do those things. He offered you the opportunity to do so without obligation (except to pay for what you received) and you accepted.

He owes you nothing.
