Yes. I believe he has talked about this at some point, I can't remember the interview, though.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

He has talked before about owning James Brown boots.

Being such a fan of Joni, I bet he has a copy of "Seeding Of Summer Lawns" lying around too.

If he does than i would think that probably those artists gave them to him themselves when they found out about the bootleg and got their own copy.

Well, not quite. From memory, he was quoted as saying he wanted to "hear every note he ever played" or something like that. He didn't actually confess to owning any bootlegs.

I remember him going on about showing Mayte all of Stevie's award show performances from the 70s. I'd call those boots, considering the tv copyright laws and that there were no home recording devices back then.

Copyright law?
Recording for personal use?
Fair use!
Whatever gets out that way, recording devices present or not, is in the open.

See this thread...

It's funny because Prince knew I was a huge KB fan. He was too, but not like me. The first time I asked him if he liked Kate Bush he said, she's my favorite woman. I also made him a tape of all the KB b-sides, which fucking rule.

I remember him talking about watching (not just listening) hours and hours of performances of James Brown and studying them to see how he was conducting his band. That stuff was not for 'sale' back in those days. In fact he even once tried to excuse his possession of those items by saying that the difference between bootlegs of yesteryear and bootlegs of today was that not everyone had access to them and that since they were so difficult to get and circulation was minimal, they weren't that big of a deal. They were bootlegging stuff you really couldn't buy anyway. Now they're bootlegging things that are for sale and it's causing financial strain on artists and the business in general.

If you own bootlegs, don't expect others not to smile
