I think people r taking the lyrics entirely too literally.

I think he uses an image of a letter for the exact reason that it is so understated in relation to the offenses being committed. And while "no assistance in AIDS" may not be true, the idea he is trying to get across is that with as much $ as the Gov't AND Private industries spend on other issues, couldn't more & b spent on AIDS research. Don't look at the lyrics so literally. It's a symbolic song based on symbols and not actuality.

It';s reflected in the title as well. Seriously with all the issues mentioned and the title is "Dear Mr Man" instead of "WTF IS GOING ON U IDIOTS IN GOVERNMENT!!!!"

The amount of anger is reflected by the amount of reserve it took to hold the gut feeling back.

at least that's what I get out of it.

Yer prolly right. I've only ever listened to it in the literal sense.

Which is the way he presented it by mentioning events that LITERALLY happened. shrug

For me, I've never looked up to Prince for guidance or inspiration for how to live my life. I've never look to Prince as someone that I could really relate to. Maybe it's because he's old enough to be my dad, he's only 2 yrs younger than my Mom. Plus he's famous, I'm not and that makes us different right there.

I say all of that to say that I look at songs like Dear Mr Man or Sign O The Times as Prince talking about the world from his point of view. I can agree with some things, I can disagree but I personally don't feel the need to rip him apart for feeling this way but if others do, then that's on them. I was in the Military and we fought & still fight for the rights of people to say what they want, even if it's crazy. Besides, someone else might share his views and it doesn't make the song less valid if I don't. It's just music. The cool thing about this is if you don't like the song, we can always skip it and play something else. If this song hits you the wrong way, maybe it should be a catalyst for anyone here to want to go out and do something to try and show why Prince's view of the world is wrong. Let it be inspiration for anyone here who feels this way. It would not be a bad thing.

I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

well apparently, according to U, they didn't happen. There IS assistance in AIDS, voting helps ABSOLUTELY NO ONE, and prince really did write a letter to GW, because he just KNEW the illiterate man would read it. And of course Prince doesn't understand AT ALL, why certain miscarriges of justice and economic equality take place in this country.

I disagree with the no-sense-in-voting-line but overall Dear Mr. Man has several importnant points.

if prince doesn't vote, then he cannot complain about the president or the direction the USA is going in, because he didn't do anything to change it by voting. wink

having said that....i love the song!!! lol

i agree with most of the things prince says but the NO VOTING thing is fuckin ridiculous. When changes come to america and the world the same JW's are gonna be benefiting from it even though most of them didnt vote and contribute

eek which would I rather? LOL

my name was hotmail's suggestion when it wouldn't except just 'smiler' as a username about 11 years ago...had it ever since...(though it's actually smiler_69). I have had endless jokes sent to me since smile

I've read on and all I think is confused
This is what it's like in the dream factory...

[The flaming really got over the top on this thread. That is not going to be allowed. Too bad as there were some points made between flames. lock - Mars23]
Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it.
