I'll sum it up in one sentence: All the interactivity of Prince and the audience is priceless. That is what makes this set worth it.

I keep listening to it. The music is awesome, the band sounds tight, Prince sounds like he is having a great time, and you can feel the audience. It would not be nearly as great without their participation!

You, the fans of Prince are the real stars of this set. Consider it YOUR set, as many of you are in the audience showing your love, singing songs close to your heart, and singing them to an artist that has made many of you feel good for a long time.

Treasure it, it's a keeper.

Did he take out the covers eh performed due to licensing etc perhaps? I do like that 111=3 into Love Rollercoaster--but we have the boot for that anyways.

I'm SURE this is the reason!

The ONA live CD is very good.

His performance of Joy In Repetition isnt as tight as, say the 1996 TV concert special, but its more like a long jam. He changed one of the lyrics to "four letter words will not be heard in this place tonight".

Disc 3 is great cruising music. The groove he put together for Peach as is a trip, not to mention the lengthy Dorothy Parker.

When U Were mine is done in falsetto, which he hasnt done in a while.

Not as tight as the 1996 TV concert special??? You must be nuts!! nuts I haven't even received mine yet (though I've already heard this aftershow version), and I know for a fact that this one completely blows away that one. The one from '96 was mostly pre-recorded, just like the rest of the concert, and while at the time was great to hear (when he was performing mostly crap songs and hits), it can't even compare to any of these ONA versions!!

Eggsellent! biggrin

And even though I haven't heard it yet, audience participation is always part of the live experience. If the audience is digging it and participating it's part of the experience.

Yeahhh

So how about "2 Nigs United for West Compton"? Does that one even come close to resembling the original version?

I've got a 6,000 word review that's just about to come out of the oven. At least I think it's almost done. You never really know when it's done until it's done.

And I wasn't even going to write a review, but when inspiration hits, you just got to go along for the ride. And Prince is inspiring the hell out of me again.

You mean he doesn't include the segue into "Love Rollercoaster" in his performing "1+1+1 Is 3"???... sad

Damn...

no... not at all... not even hinted at... he does do "1+1+1 is 3" in its entirety, however... but when it ends, it ends and the next song is "the other side of the pillow" complete with a guitar into that sounds just like b.b. king (the tone & style and everything)... it is kind of a bummer and off that he didn't include "lvoe rollercoster," because in the booklet it talks about how when a guy at a soundcheck started playing "love rollercoaster" on the guitar, prince said the guy was stealing his act... so, it mentions in the book that he played this song on the tour, but it is still not on the cd... but, people who were at the concerts will probably not miss it... and with each listen, i miss it less and less...

I just hope that whichever version of "Xenophobia" he used doesn't include his "skit" of asking if it's better to "give or recieve" in the middle of that song...he did that at the Kodak performance, and it disrupted the great groove and flow of that song...

no such luck... the whole skit is there... "well, if it's better to be a giver, then why don't you give up your seat to the lady in the back"... sorry...

all in all, i think this is a set that will not necessarily have mass appeal, but i think it will appeal outside of his hardcore fans... i think a lot of casual fans will also get into it...

i already have 2 of my good buddies wanting copies of it...

my buddy kenny only owns the hits discs and i would consider him the casual prince fan... and he wants a copy pretty badly...

my buddy will also wants it badly, but i haven't decided yet, if he's a hardcore fan or not... he owns the hits, "purple rain," "diamonds & pearls", and ":prince:"... but he also owns "gold experience" and "the rainbow children," which are his two favorites...

my friend carol, who was a prince fan as a child and on until the early 90s, thought the live disc was ok, but was really lusting after my extra copy of the ONA piano cd... so, shrug... i dunno...

i still think bringing the price down a little bit might help him out here...

Loved the whole set of CDs, but like other folks, I do really miss the Love Rollercoaster part. That brought da house down in Buffalo and I'm sure everywhere else. A definite highlight (Prince: "Ah, y'all showing ya age now!'') 2 funny.
But look at me, quibbling with what is overall excellence. Oh, the shame.
I just got it so no time to review it yet, but let's just say for now that it's worth the wait.

I'm with you...when the first strands of guitar from "Love Rollercoaster" got played, people literally jumped up and out of their seats, everyone yellin' and screaming they were so excited...it's a shame that it got edited out...

But I'm overall just way, way too anxious to get this box set...UPS, hurry up!!! (I'm hoping Freespirit gets hers today at least if I don't get mine... smile heart)
