Am I The Only One Who Prefers Under The Cherry Moon... To Purple Rain? . I know most people love Purple Rain and consider it to be Prince's best movie, but I watched both movies tonight after not seeing either in a while and I realized that I enjoyed UTCM much more than PR. PR of course has great music (as does UTCM), but overall I found most of the acting to be terrible, especially on Apollonia's part and it was a little too dramatic for me as well. I didn't care for the scenes with Prince's parents at all. Morris Day and Jerome were the bright spots in PR for me, they stole every scene they were in.
I just prefer UTCM overall though. It's one of those movies that's so bad it's good. Prince is f-ing in hillarious in this movie. The Bat scene and the part where Prince and Jerome write "Wrecka Stow" on the napkin just to mess with Mary is . Love it. Another thing I like about this movie is the cinemetography. It just has a really good look and feel to it. Also, Prince has never looked better, he was gorgeous in this movie . I wonder if you have to be a Prince fan to like and appreciate this movie though 'cause I tried to get some friends and family to watch this with me, but they couldn't sit through it . I was thinking maybe I just had bad taste in movies, but for whatever reason I just love UTCM. "And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ
"Baby, that was much too fast"...Goodnight dear sweet Prince. I'll love you always

I love UTCM and play it all the time now. But I went to see PR when it was in the movies about 16 times, haven't looked at it in a while.

PR is the classic which i prefer 4 the musical/performance/nostalgia value,
but j'adore UTCM 4 the comedy/burlesque factor & anyway it's too much fun watching him trying 2 pull his love interest

i have both, but i probably watch purple rain more, cuz that's always on tv (and whenever it's on, i like HAVE to watch it, it's crazy ). i'd say i like both equally, but under the cherry moon is "funner" . never watch graffiti bridge . don't have it and don't plan on buying it anytime soon life's a bitch, but god forbid the bitch divorce me...

i saw it once & it was difficult 2 sit through.. his character was so passive & quite irritating, unlike the sexualdynamo that was christopher tracey.. altho i love the music, can't say the same about his hair

PR is the better film. Without a doubt, just on technical merits alone. Prince isn't that great of a director, sorry to admit. I wanna be loved to the 9s, so let me cover your ass with this sheet, and baby, you better stay on the beat! Cause you know the Karma Sutra? I can rewrite it. But, with half as many words.

I didn't give "Under the Cherry Moon," the attention I gave "Purple Rain." I'd like 2 see "Cherry Moon," again...but I don't have it. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

I love UTCM It has some very funny scenes, imo. Yes, PR does as well, but they are VERY different movies. UTCM didn't receive the attention that PR did, but I don't think people gave it a chance. As soon as they saw that it wasn't PR2, they bailed.
Smooches;) | |

Used 2 b able 2 watch both 4 free on netflix. I prefer PR as a whole movie, but I prefer P in UTCM. He has a bit more confidence infront of the camera I think. He's so lighthearted and charming... Not to mention better looking at that moment than any man, women, child, animal, plant species....

Well, I believe Purple Rain is his best movie and remains a classic among Prince movies. Sorry, but I just found UTCM to be too minstrel, but that's just my opinion. I'm sure others adored it. [Edited 1/17/09 14:11pm]

at the time - utcm was wierd i remember being so excited to go see it, but then was a bit dumb struck at the black n white and generally it was in a way more high brow then PR. you have to consider that at that time video was new, b&w films were still considered normal on tv and in the uk we only had 3 channels to choose from, so utcm was considered an arty music film.
it was one of those fims you could say youd seen but then forget for a while - but then we got dvds and i re-watched it a short while ago, in hind sight its a brilliant comedy of errors in the great tradition of theatre - the whole scene of the ladder and prince in the bedroom of the mum not the daughter is hysterical! its very slapstick, but i think prince plays the comedy role very well. in PR all he had to do was pout and sing. utcm gave him and jerome a chance to ham it up, have a laugh and i think that comes across. i dont prefer it to pr as that has a special place in my heart BUT utcm is special - after all it taught us - its only mountains and the sea, theres nothing geater than u and me! excellent 80s cult absolutely all kids must-see!!!!! walk with crooked shoes www.myspace/syblepurplelishous

Naw man PR was the joint! Hands down. I can see why chicks dig UTCM but it was a bad movie. WORD

I can't make a comparison between the two. Different storyline, different atmosphere, different vybe. PR was a deep movie most of the way through. UTCM was more light-hearted with a message. I luv both.
[Edited 1/18/09 5:14am] I swear the words "HATER" is wayyy over-rated...smh
