Visions has been released? Did I miss that? Where?

"Visions" is an instrumental solo piano piece by Lisa Coleman, recorded in Prince's basement. She released it herself under the title of "Minneapolis #1" on a three inch CD single that was issued as bonus disc to the limited edition of Wendy & Lisa's Eroica.
It also includes three other instrumentals.

lol

Might be slightly paraphrased.

I'm laughing 'cause he apparently planned to get from start to finish, so to speak, in less than an hour, not counting the time to chat up any potential ladies. lol

There were some constraints in space due to the current technology, but even if he had to make SOTT a 3 disc set I think it would have been worth it to include some of those really stellar songs that got cut.

i wonder who actually chose what was to be included?

Prince did.

I'm torn between the Crystal Ball listing and the Dream Factory listing.. If Prince had incorporated the best stuff from each of them it would have been his best album without a doubt!

Having Dream Factory in place of Sign O' The Times means we would gain these songs:

Visions
Dream Factory
Train
Crystal Ball
A Place In Heaven
Last Heart
Witness 4 The Prosecution
Movie Star
All My Dreams

But we would lose:

Play In The Sunshine
Housequake
Hot Thing
Forever In My Life
U Got The Look
If I Was Your Girlfriend
It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night
Adore

So I vote for keeping SOTT. Hopefully Roadhouse Garden will eventually see the light of day and will contain a lot of these lost-era Revolution tracks.

Agreed, on keeping SOTT tracks as released. Of the nine Dream Factory tracks listed I would only miss Witness 4 the Prosecution and Last Heart.

I also remember the conversation that after the failure of "under the cherry moon" Warner Bros. was leary of coming out with a triple album. Which sales usually stink for.

"Leary"? They refused to do it. lol Hell if I remember correctly they didn't really want SOTT to be a double album.

Didn't they request His Highness cut some of the tracks? I seem to remember hearing If I Was Your Girlfriend and Ballad of Dorothy Parker among those the label was uneasy with.

I always thought that maybe Prince featured only part of his face on SOTT to make a statement that he felt it was only half of what he wanted his original statement to be. Side C to Crystal Ball is so dynamic, Crystal Ball. If I was Your Girlfriend. Rock Hard In A Funky Place. Not to mention this album would have included tracks like Joy In Repetition and Good Love while still maintaining tracks like Housquake and Adore and a extended Shockadelica. This probably would have been seen as Prince grandest and most artistic statement ever. I could imagine critics who may have felt that it was pretentious, egotistical and over bearing at the time, coming to realize later what a break through in modern music CB would have been, we had George Harrison's triple set after he left the Beatles which is a pretty good album, but I think the final configuration of CB still holds it's ground even today. A three album set with no filler has never been done to my knowledge, unless Zappa put out something that I am missing. A project like that would have took a very special promotional champagne at the time and would have to have been carefully marketed. Prince saw this as his masterpiece, and fought hard to get Cb released to no avail.

Dream Factory would have been critically acclaimed and I'm sure it would have had hits. Maybe I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man would have been the central hit focus of Dream Factory. I noticed that Dream Factory has a lighter feel to it than Crystal Ball, more playful a bit more psychedelic pop, still very artistic, almost a double extension of Parade, both of these projects are very creative and again some of my favorite work. It's interesting to note that P scrapped the DF concept after the girls left the Revolution, and he decided to cut most of the material that featured Wendy and Lisa from CB. Which most of us know here on the org but I guess I am ranting about my favorite projects.

one more thing I would like to note, when I burned myself a copy of Crystal Ball final configuration I noticed that it is a double cd. so what may have been seen as huge opus would simply be a double cd by todays standards.

I tried not to be definitive because I'm not sure how factual it was. That being said...couldn't we look at this period as the beginning of the end of Prince's relationship with WB?

Perhaps. But if the implication in Dinner With Dolores is to be believed, something started going tits up in '84: Purple Rain time. I wonder? hmmm

I think it's safe to say we may never get the full story. Our Hero's not often forthcoming with details not muddled up in Princebonics.

This is the one "album" of his that I've always wanted to hear. I probably have it in my collection from The Work but I want to hear it as one album. This thread makes me want to look for this "CD" that much more.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I think the new website is the appropriate media to explore earlier material/projects(I seriously doubt he would tho).

I do think the likes of Roadhouse Garden (shelved), and original concepts (incl original and alternate sequences) like Parade, Dream Factory, Crystal Ball, Graffiti Bridge, Rave, and The Dawn are perfect projects that contain interesting historical and career storylines. Plus live accounts like The Second Coming....

A great opportunity to give true accounts of WB stories, and Band backgrounds (Eg Revolution) behind these projects,

I think this approach and content would attract publicity and praise.

Df or CB?

for CB you will need the version of rebirth of the flesh that segues into play in the sunshine, I use the version of crystal ball with the purple underground speech for DF or CB you need the version of the ball that segues into joy in repetition, also an alternate version of I could never take the place of your man the extended shockadelica the unedited good love I use the shorter SOTT and the original version of its gonna be a beautiful night without the overdubs, thats my copy of CB, but I think I would have preferred this to see a released over SOTT or DF.

all of the material from SOTT is still included, its simply a combination of DF and the aborted camille album. the only thing we would have missed is you got the look which was recorded specifically for SOTT after he realized he would have to cut it down to a double album

There's an earlier config of DF that includes "A Large Room With No Light" which I would love to see released.
