Yup, me too.
My ex-girlfriend LOVES musicology, but not necessarily all the other Prince I made her listen to. I think that because, no matter what people on this board want to say, the truth is it's full of new, interesting sounds for Prince that are tried & true motifs in the 1960s/1970s era R&B/Soul sound. [Edited 1/13/09 22:06pm] I wanna be loved to the 9s, so let me cover your ass with this sheet, and baby, you better stay on the beat! Cause you know the Karma Sutra? I can rewrite it. But, with half as many words.

i always liked it (& The Marrying Kind together also).
When the album came out I was hoping that If Eye Was The Man In Ur Life it could be a hot Summer single! oh well "Hyperactive when I was small, Hyperactive now I'm grown, Hyperactive 'till I'm dead and gone"

I also love the coupling of this song with The Marrying Kind. Actually The Marrying Kind is my favorite song off of Musicology, which is a really good album. I REALLY wanted to hear The Marrying Kind live. I thought a live band would just kill it. That was my only disappointment with the Musicology tour. I would have enjoyed hearing more of the album cuts live, but I know that was not the purpose of the tour. I still enjoyed the summer of 2004 immensely! I hope 2009 has something great in store as well. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

That little jazz breakdown sent me into hyperbole about the album the first time I heard it--I had gotten the disc at the movie screening and stayed up late to write a really fammed out review. Though my love for the album has dimmed (just a little), that song still gets me every time.

That infers it's drawing from a sound during an era that was prevalent. So I'm asking you to please show me a song that sounds like these songs. Particularly from other artists, as that would be what is necessary to create a sound from which this could be compared to. I know it doesn't sound *anything* like 90s rock & roll, so I look to 90s R&B/Hip-hop, and I'm sort of at a loss there too. Does it sound like H-Town? No. Blackstreet? No. Montell Jordan? Nope. TLC? Boyz II Men? Aaliyah? Usher? No. So what exactly are you comparing these songs to in order to draw your conclusion? Or are you just trying to be provocative? That's my guess. It is pure hyperbole without any basis in reality. To say something is dated is dismissive without telling u anything at all about the quality of the music. Even if a song recalled some past time period so what. I don't see how that has any bearing on your enjoying or not enjoying a song. Some folks here are super-critical of prince as a means to booster their own egos.

I never thought of that at all but you're right. It doesn't matter to me, I still love the song. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. I agree with you completely. Most of the songs on Musicology should have been performed live, no question about that but like you said, he had a mission and it was to bring back the lost fans and he did it. If there is another tour, I hope we will hear more new songs in the shows not just the old. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Sooooo perfectly jammin'! I love the Musicology sound, there's so much happening and you can smell the joy he had while recording every single instrument for the album and still it's so clean and perfect. Give the whole album another spin, maybe you'll soon find a piece of the "If Eye Was The Man In Ur Life" brilliance in the others songs too! I LOVE the beginning! Those cymbals are just raw and metallic. And then it just jumps off into this tidy lil' jam. SLAMMIN'! And see that's the thing. I DID pop in Musicology the other day. Listened to the whole thing. That's how I rediscovered "IEWTMIUL". That said, it's mos def my favorite song on the disc.

Another one of those damn songs I want to know what the impetus was. [Edited 1/13/09 13:23pm] I'll have to respectfully disagree. "Call My Name" is corny. (and do we REALLY need another song wherein Prince talks about his name?) I like the tongue in cheekiness about it. Part of it's appeal.

Dated? I think every OTHER song (with the exceptions of "The Marrying Kind" and "Reflection") on that record sounds dated. I'm curious to know what else you consider dated.

Please, I emplore you to find me another song from whatever 'time period' this is supposed to sound like. Pleasepleasepleaseplease. It sounds like a 90's song. I guess I could see it on TGE (which I didn't care for). But that's just because it kinda fits with the other playing on that album. Ultimately, I think "If..." sounds like, dare I say it, a "return to form".

The Marrying Kind/If I Was The Man In Your Life is my favorite part of that album.
It's hard to imagine separating them. In fact, I made a compilation full of a bunch of edits (don't ask) and included these two together, each in edited form, but still as one piece.

Your writing seems to bespeak a self-importance and ego-centric view that is not flattering in the least. And same goes for songs on PE like Future Baby Mama, 'if you ever need a hand, call me, I'll help' and Somewhere Here on Earth, he knows she's 'out there.' Are these songs about women he knows, wants or has? Prince lyrics can be a royal mystery!
