Papa Thoughts

Along with "Letitgo," I think "Papa" is probably the best song from the Come album.

It reminds me of some of the tracks of Sign o' the Times or Around the World in the Day. Not necessarily because of subject matter, but because of the heavy, powerful messaging coupled with initially simple, interesting music.

The last 32 seconds only add to this. Part of it's how the juxtaposition of the rock & roll compares to the earlier, somber tone of the music, but also in its execution: The way the guitar and drums intertwine with that particular Prince voice which was so prevalent on Purple Rain and ATWIAD.

I wish the song was longer. It seems almost as if it's missing a verse, which may be a testament to Prince being lazy (I know some here think he gets lazier as the years go on) or perhaps he thought it wasn't needed. Not sure.

Overall, it's a beacon of light, regardless of how dark the lyrics are, on Come.

Note: Though, "Dark" also stands as a highlight of this disc, but I do prefer the version on Crystal Ball a little more for some reason.

I wanna be loved to the 9s, so let me cover your ass with this sheet, and baby, you better stay on the beat! Cause you know the Karma Sutra? I can rewrite it. But, with half as many words.

I think Come is a good album. one of his strongest of the 90's.. I like the change up, it's a bit darker and quality driven.

I'm not sure if this would have been a highlight if the rest of his music was good from the 90's.. You see, that is a highlight due to the extreme bad music that was pumped out of him during this decade.

I think it's a highlight on this album. But now that I'm listening to the whole thing again, I'm having to reconsider that.

This stood out to me a lot when I was younger, as one of the songs I loved. But now that I'm older and hopefully wiser, I find more and more of his music and its nuances absolutely wonderful.

Papa, Letitgo, and Dark are my favorite songs on this disc. No doubts.

I agree with U, In that it should have been longer, because on a groove level it had everything, but on the angst the lyrics bring up, it possible was just right. 4 how long can U talk about the pain U carry to a microphone, hoping to get understandment 3-6 months later.
The trails of an artist?
cool

Great songs but the title track is the tour de force of the CD

Come is in my top 5 albums. I didn't love it at first.
I love Papa, Dark, Space, I love the segues...the only thing I skip is the last track...just seems so unnecessary.

Love Papa, always have since I first saw it on The Beautiful Experience tv special.

Come is a strange album to me. If asked, I'd say without hesitation, that I like it. Yet there are a number of tracks on there which I'm really not bothered about. Namely, Space, Dark, Solo, Letitgo and Orgasm.

However, I absolutely love, Come, Pheremone, Loose!, Papa and Race. For me, it's the strength of these tracks that make it a highly regarded album. Although, I do prefer the unreleased versions of the title track.
RIP sad

It isn't exactly my favorite song, but it is one of my favorite beats.

I love, "Come." The lyrics 2 "Papa," are sad, but the song having that emotion is the song's intention...I like it..."And there's always a rainbow...at the end of that rain!" cool

i love the album, especially space!
my thoughts about 'papa' are that it's very twisted..anyone else get the sense he enjoyed being walloped..?
or almost enjoyed the memories?
i find it uncomfortable listen, tho i do admire that he's tackled another taboo in song like only he can do..
but the emotion in his voice & the way he uses his voice in this song is kinda depraved, almost sexual :cringe:
it's a cool beat & then lightens up in party mode by saying..'don't abuse your kids, or they'll turn out like me' always a rainbow etc..
like that's such a bad thing? lol

This is my most played Prince Album...!!!

I return to it time and time again, Space is the most played song but I really really enjoy listening to all of them.

Re Papa... I have to force my self to sit through the "smack oooooh papa" bit
As the way he intonates makes it sound kinda like he is enjoying the beatings? boxed love the way it rocks out at the end.

Cracking album.
One minute they want peace……

Then do everything to make it go away. rolleyes

Pheremone is a beast, but Papa makes me sad. On the other hand Orgasms makes me laugh so I guess it all evens out.
