A look back at Graffiti Bridge...

Like I earlier said, I think the songs in it do not "stick altogether". Some songs are great (for me "Joy..." and "Elephants and Flowers" , "Question Of U", "Still Would Stand All Time", "Melody Cool", "The Lastest Fashion", "Shake", "New Power Generation", "We Can Funk" to some extent "Release It"

To compare it with the "symbol" album (even if this one can be more considered as a whole album), I listen to Graffiti with much more ease... More funky maybe and believe me I think some songs on "Symbol" are terrific!!!

What do you think?

It is also to strange for me but I think the follower to Lovesexy could be "Rainbow..." instead of "Graffiti Bridge" and his other albums released before his last jazz/funk installment. Is it the return of the Truth? Or something I am the only one to think?

'joy in repetition' is in my top 3 Prince songs.'Question of U' is class as well.I can live without the rest of the album.

I kind of agree with U, in that at times these albums feel loosely put together. 4 me however it doesn't really affect me. I think that those reasons are why most people don't Like Graffiti bridge. becuz in all truths it has some absolutely fantastic songs! (you already mentioned the quintessentials!)

Yeah if you take into account this Album and all the followers until Rainbow Children, the albums were more of a collection of songs than the rest (i'm not judging the quality though). Diamonds And Pearls could be an exception (maybe because of the rise of the NPG, by the way if you look at the lyrics some songs were directed at Warner Bros...)...

i am actually listening to this album just now.
I think graffiti is a really good album.
I hear a lot of people diss the song Graffiti Bridge but i think its cool.
oh well each to their own.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

Tom

From what I've read, several songs off Graffiti Bridge were originally written around the SOTT sessions. I always look at them as part of SOTT for some reason, and not a movie soundtrack.

The album itself is quite cool. Alot of heavy funk.

I compare the albums to Princes hairdos at the time.

During Grafitti Bridge Prince let his hair down, and let it hang loose.

During Diamonds & Pearls / Symbol, his 'do was alot more uptight and refined. Those albums had a jazzier, classier approach, not the "anything goes" kind of funk on GB.

We Can Funk would never have made its way on to D&P or Symbol. LOL.

wink

That much is clear... True also to say that his hair now is the kind of "jazzy style/soul" hairdo that suits perfectly his musical vision of the moment!!!

GB is an album of uneven extremes. The cream of the crop is "Joy..." "Question of U" and "We Can Funk," from there there are some good songs, but nothing as transcendent as the first two. Those two could make the cut for a number of great Prince albums. For me the problem was that he allowed everyone else's songs on the album. The songs The Time did for that album weren't even good enough to go on an album by The Time. "Round and Round" is too bubble gum. But hey, I'm one of those odd-balls that digs "Tick Tick Bang." Some of the rest of the songs are way too cornball. Maybe had he included the 12" version of "Thieves" it would have turned out a little better.

And since he was going to sample Tower of Power's drums from "Squib Cakes" I wish "Release It" had been a worthy song.

I think Graffiti Bridge would've been higher in peoples
estimations if it had been split into 2 albums.
One Prince album (just containing the songs sung by Prince)
& one soundtrack album (containing everything else)

Prince: New Power Generation
(music from the motion picture: Graffiti Bridge)

1. Can't Stop This Feeling I Got
2. We Can Funk (featuring George Clinton)
3. The Question Of U
4. Elephants & Flowers
5. Joy In Repetition (with full intro)
6. Thieves In The Temple (extended version)
7. Tick Tick Bang
8. Still Would Stand All Time
9. New Power Generation (parts 1 & 2)

Graffiti Bridge: Motion Picture Soundtrack

1. Seven Corners (Ingrid Chavez)
2. Release It (The Time)
3. Round And Round (Tevin Campbell)
4. Love Machine (The Time)
5. Number One (Robyn Power)
6. Shake! (The Time)
7. Melody Cool (Mavis Staples)
8. The Latest Fashion (The Time & Prince)
9. Graffiti Bridge (Prince, Mavis, Tevin, TC & Robyn)

haha...I like the comment about comparing the eras to Prince's hair! So true! LOL

I love the Graffiti Bridge album (and the movie). The positive vibe it gives off just makes me feel good. smile

However, I don't agree with your comment suggesting that TRC should have followed Lovesexy. IMHO, TRC is the one Prince album that could have been put on a shelf somewhere and forgotten. In the past, I would have only said that about The Black Album. It's frustrating because I can hear the potential in TRC, but Prince wasted too much time on negativity and ruins it for me.

I also really like the idea of splitting Graffiti Bridge into two albums. biggrin

I have no inside info or anything, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's what Prince wanted to do. But because WB didn't want to risk too much after the bomb that was UTCM, the way the soundtrack was combined with all the performances meant not having to take a bigger loss with more than one album from a potential theatrical failure. Of course Prince being the draw at that point (as compared to all the others on the album), it made sense to combine it from WB's standpoint.

This is all speculation on my part, of course. But I do have a feeling that Prince may have wanted seperate albums, and compromised that to get the movie out.

That idea would have been perfect but it's one of the things that we'll always have to go "What If" to.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I am in 100% total agreement with you !

I would use the original versions of Tick,Tick,Bang & Cant Stop This Feeling I Got instead of the album versions.

What singles would you release from the Prince album?
