Anyone else think 'Batman' is actually a great album?

Maybe it's nostalgia speaking, but I really think that the Batman album is pretty damn great.

'Arms of Orion' is maybe a little too schmaltzy/sappy, and 'Batdance' is, well....sample-heavy and all of the place, but on a whole, I really love most of the songs on the album.

Am I alone?
I wanna be loved to the 9s, so let me cover your ass with this sheet, and baby, you better stay on the beat! Cause you know the Karma Sutra? I can rewrite it. But, with half as many words.

There are some interesting experiments on here (The Future, Batdance). Arms of Orion although schmaltzy shows at attempt to try some classic songwriting techniques ala bert bacarack. Overall, however, the tinny sound that he was experimenting with just didn't work but I like the effort and spunk he gave to this project.

The Future, Electric Chair, Vikki Waiting, Lemon Crush, Scandalous, and of course, Trust.

Good, good stuff.

Yeah, the sound was tinny. It was very thin - sounded very 'me and my synthesizer.' Does he ever play any of these songs in concert?

I love it. This is actually the first Prince album since "Purple Rain" that I liked at first listen rather than having to let it grow on me. It felt like a brief return to the cold dark "old Prince" before his style change in 1985.

still gets much spin. and i acutally LIKE The Arms of Orion. its a rare POP Prince ballad. they're typically more in the vein of Scandalous. Trust is actually my least favorite song. Vicki Waiting and Electric Chair are the faves tho.

I really enjoy Batman, but am not sure if it is "great". Some of the cuts are real gems, but others have not aged well.
Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it.

"Scandalous" definately takes me back to the days of "Do Me Baby" and "International Lover".

I definately think it's a great album. I love all the songs on there except for The Arms of Orion but it's not that bad. It fits the theme of Batman perfectly. It's definately an underrated piece of work.

It's nothing short of amazing that this CD is 20 years old now. It was like yesterday when my Grandfather brought the album (my last "new" vinyl album). Time sure loves to go by.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Great CD. Good follow up to Lovesexy. Batdance is very dark and menacing, as are the Future and Electric Chair.

Yes, I love it.
It was the album that made me become a fan.

I think it stands out from the rest of his work due to the boldness of the instruments.
And it made the movie cool too.

It's a good album, but I wouldn't call it great. It definitely represents a turn toward a less daring approach to his music. I see the Batman album as the beginning, in that sense, of one of the worst Prince eras; that being from 1989 to 1992.

Some of the tracks are great because of how fearlessly dark they are. Electric Chair shows an interesting glimpse of guilt, and songs like Trust and Partyman maintain a cold feel to them despite sounding like funky party songs. The Future and Vickie's Waiting in particular show a subtle vulnerability; a feeling of uncertainty and even dread for things to come. Batdance is the perfect kind of quirky mixed track to close a Prince album. It sums up how fun Prince can be to listen to.

Unfortunately, the album also introduced a disingenuous trend in Prince's albums. The Arms of Orion is so over the top with its saccharine sound, it doesn't have a trace of integrity. Lemon Crush sounds perfunctory and dispensable. Scandalous makes good use of Prince's beautiful falsetto, but it is an otherwise rudimentary ballad obviously aimed at capturing the r&b crowd.

Batman is a strong piece of work overall. The fact that it stands out as his weakest 80's album speaks loudly of what an amazing decade he had.

I wouldn't say it's his weakest album of the 80s. Black Album definitely would have fit that, had it actually been released in the 80s, and I definitely prefer Batman to LoveSexy or Parade, and I like both of those.

Oh, and Lemon Crush is badass.
