"If Eye Was The Man In Ur Life" is ruling my world RIGHT NOW!!!! I'm generally not a fan of the Musicology ablum (yes, ablum), but this joint is fire! I cannot stop listening to it on repeat. All the elements are there to make it (in my ears), one of P's BEST jams EVAR!
Sorry for screaming, but what do y'all think?

I completely agree with you on that. I just LOVE everything about that track, especially the "If eye.. was the.. man in your life.. I'd make u..happy.. I'd treat you right *drums cracking in, bass coming in, gettin it OOOOON* Was it U that I saw outside the liquor store..."
Sooooo perfectly jammin'! I love the Musicology sound, there's so much happening and you can smell the joy he had while recording every single instrument for the album and still it's so clean and perfect. Give the whole album another spin, maybe you'll soon find a piece of the "If Eye Was The Man In Ur Life" brilliance in the others songs too!

Great song. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

2nd best song on the disc. Call My Name is superior, but only because it's a little more genuine, a little less tongue-in-cheek.
Another one of those damn songs I want to know what the impetus was. [Edited 1/13/09 13:23pm] I wanna be loved to the 9s, so let me cover your ass with this sheet, and baby, you better stay on the beat! Cause you know the Karma Sutra? I can rewrite it. But, with half as many words.

It's not bad. Together with The Marrying Kind, it sounds dated. Actually, it sounded dated when it first came out. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Dated to when?
Please, I emplore you to find me another song from whatever 'time period' this is supposed to sound like. Pleasepleasepleaseplease. I swear, Anakin, Dark Sith Lord of the worst atrocity to ever happen to filmdom, you just want to rabble-rouse. As if the entire Purple Rain or any other 80s album doesn't sound 'dated.' But i guarantee you, no one would be able to hear Man in Ur Life OR The Marrying Kind on a cold listen and say, 'OH YEAH! That TOTALLY sounds very 2004! Yup!' You said it sounds 90s.
That infers it's drawing from a sound during an era that was prevalent. So I'm asking you to please show me a song that sounds like these songs. Particularly from other artists, as that would be what is necessary to create a sound from which this could be compared to. I know it doesn't sound *anything* like 90s rock & roll, so I look to 90s R&B/Hip-hop, and I'm sort of at a loss there too. Does it sound like H-Town? No. Blackstreet? No. Montell Jordan? Nope. TLC? Boyz II Men? Aaliyah? Usher? No. So what exactly are you comparing these songs to in order to draw your conclusion? Or are you just trying to be provocative? That's my guess. I wanna be loved to the 9s, so let me cover your ass with this sheet, and baby, you better stay on the beat! Cause you know the Karma Sutra? I can rewrite it. But, with half as many words.

If I wanted to be provocative, I'd make a far bigger claim than just not liking a single song from Musicology. I never said it sounds like a 90's song by another artist. I was more along the lines that it sounded like 90's Prince. Come to think of it though, I think I might have pinned it down to the wrong decade. I'm listening to it now, and the synths, as well as keyboard work reminiscient of The Beautiful Ones, evoke the 80's more. It also sounds like it has fake horns, which regardless of whether they are synth horns or not, just don't sound good in this song. I can see the 80s more than the 90s, though I don't think it does a good job of achieving that if that was his goal.
The biggest problem with this song in my opinion is it's clearly just him in the studio. If he were jammin' out with the band, I think this thing would be far more energetic and exciting. Just for the record, the 'horns' are a combination of real saxophone and synth, and it's John Blackwell on drums, so it's not a completely self-produced song.
I just love the way this song flows, and the interplay between the lead vocal and the backing vocals and little instrument flurries. Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

I actually think If Eye Was sounds like a Mint Condition song. They're from the 90's. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Mint is a great band, and that's a really good song.
