Dirty Mind

You know, I was listening to this album last night & realized, THIS IS A GREAT F***IN' ALBUM! Before, I always used to put this one beneath Purple Rain & 1999, but now all that's changed. Dirty Mind is on par with his other classics IMO. I know what you're thinking now, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, tell me something I don't know", right? But I guess this is one of the reasons why Prince will always be my #1. He will never EVER get old on me. Does anyone else want to discuss the greatness of this album & why y'all like it?

I like it because it's raw & nasty. Delicious Dirty Mind & horny Head are my faves.

What about the production itself? So minimal and demo-ish. But it's still enjoyable.

YES Dirty Mind is a GREAT album, songs like When U Were Mine, Head, Uptown and Gotta Broken Heart Again are fabalous BUT SISTER is my all time favorite. I don't know what it is about that song that gets me. I tried to get my band to cover it but they were like hell no!!

Even Prince and his band won't do that kind of song anymore (sadly enough). The whole F***in' album is FANTASTIC! Can someone describe to me the hype surrounding that album when it came out, you know, like, who was digging it or how did the general public feel about it. I wasn't born yet (sadly enough).

What can one say about this brilliant masterpiece? Well, that's it's a brilliant masterpiece. biggrin Seriously, this album hooked me from the first note.
To answer your question NWF, when Dirty Mind was released, needless to say, it was a total departure for Prince. WB was expecting another album in the vein of "For You" or "Prince", but when they heard DM, they must've shit their pants. Dirty Mind is the REAL PRINCE, not the cutesy wutsey Prince of the previous two albums. Radio stations refused to play the album (although I remember hearing "Uptown" on the radio in my town) and WB decided to stick a warning label on it (this was a few years before the whole Tipper Gore/DArling Nikki controversy).
What else can you say? It SHOCKED...but it also rocked..Dirty Mind made Prince a sexual cult figure, IMO.

The Music Rocks with it's Raw sound and It's Punk Feel. And Prince's Messages were like Anthems for the Time and now with this War on it seems rather Significant. And Damn,Prince was soooHot with those Black Bikini Briefs and Leg-Warmers. My,God I just Wet Myself. Oh,My!! Oh,Prince!! OH,OH,Oooo!!!

Well I was too young to listen to the WHOLE album when it came out, but I remember hearing "uptown" a lot. It's a great album, I like the demo feel it has to it. Thanks for posting this, it made want to go listen to again, I havent lisyened to it in ages.

There was no hype behind it really. It was a "cult hit" and nothing more at that time. This is when Prince first became a "critic's darling," and although Dirty Mind didn't even go gold for years, in the ensuing years after Purple Rain I think all of Prince's back catalog eventually went gold and/or platinum. It was a very big hit with critics. One reason I like it is because it sounds nothing like anything before, not even his first two albums. It has so much punk attitude and spirit, and complete id in it. I've always considered it one of his top tier albums.

I agree. It's a true classic. The more you listen the better it gets.

Prince should Re-Master a lot of his older CD's

Dirty Mind is definitely one of his best works. It has that raw, garage sound to it. Love Dirty Mind, Sister, and When You Were Mine.

Absolutely *love* this album...some of my favorite Prince songs ever on it. And the raw, demo-like quality of it suits the whole tone & feeling of the album.

I was around 15 when I bought 'Dirty Mind' and I remember having to hide it from my mom - between the album cover, some of the lyrics, and the parental advisory warning on the front, I was afraid she might confiscate it. lol So besides the fantastic music this album contains, it for me - as a young teenager in my particular household - holds special memories because of the danger factor that went along with it.

dirty mind is my fave p album, plus it's one of my fave albums of all time in my book. occasionally folks will mention this album and someone will come along and say sumfin 2 the effect of, "that album's crap! it's so simplistic!" and junk like that.

that's the beauty of the album. before all of the over-produced and mediocre stuff, there wuz this little gem. nod
