My first happy experience with NPGMC This ONA Live set is perplexing but overall I'm really enjoying it, especially the long instrumental jams.
The sound quality itself makes it a pleasure to listen to. Its like youre standing on the stage looking out at the audience. Some of the selections he chose versus what showed up on bootleg were odd. I heard much better renditions of Adore at the Cleveland show, and on boot, than the version he chose for the ONA Live CD. The version of 1+1+1=3 was also cooler on the flash animation than the version that made its way to CD. Many of the hits he put on this set sound a bit flat, and alot of the underdog songs are given superb renditions. The extended Peach jam (which has absolutely no resemblance to the original song other than the fact that he mutters a few lines from it) is pure bliss. Even The Everlasting Now, a song which I cant stand in its studio version, deviates into an extended instrumental which is quite cool. Dorothy Parker starts off a bit similar to the recent late show version of it, but then goes 10x further with it. With CDs as cheap as they are to manufacture, it confuses me why Prince doesnt mail out live stuff to members every other month or so as part of their package. Look at all the magazines on the shelf at Barnes & Noble who throw free CDs in, look at all the AOL cds you get in the mail, I've even seen free CDs come with cereal. | |
