Prince is a genius. Forever will he be defined as a genius. There is no stupid slip up over gay-marriage, women’s rights, or self-describe slavery, that will ever dampen the fact that he is a musical force to be contended with now and for many future generations to come.

But long before the eagle eye of his lyrics turned to corporate manipulation of the record industry or the evils and perils of straying from God’s will in a dogmatic sense, Prince’s genius also expressed itself lyrically.

Where the rest of the world sought to make distinctions between the divine and the profane as diametrically opposed values, the Prince of the 80s said they were part of the same sexual-God energy. He even coined a phrase for it--LoveSexy.

The current day Prince may appear to be the preacher who summons God’s will through his preaching, but the old Prince was the preacher’s daughter who still believed in god, but snook out of the house every chance she got so she could give you some seriously mad-crazy cock suckin fun behind the skating rink on a Saturday night--But you knew damned well she’d be wiping her chin and hands clean at church the next morning without so much as one ounce of guilt. You go girl!!!! Or should I say, you go Prince!!!

In songs like , Get Off where Prince said, “Move you big ass ‘round this way so eye can work on the zippa baby![/i], Prince wasn’t saying it just for sake of shock value. Indeed in the chorus to this booty-lovin athem, Prince says “Let a woman B a woman and a Man B a man!”--he’s not just saying it as a matter of sexual preference. He’s talking about Gods divine design for male and female--don’t drown in guilt over it. Don’t be repressive to it. Revel in it, but in a mature, respectful way. He’s talking about a pecking order handed down from Jesus W. H. Christ himself. What Prince is saying is that the sexual play, so long as it is consentual and uplifting, is very much in line with God’s plan for men and women. He even states “I’ll only call you after if you say I can” bringing home the point that all things should be consensual and mutually respectful--but at the end of the day, it’s perfectly ok to bury your trimmed beard and typhoon do in some seriously delicious ass.

Not even sperm excaped Prince’s determination to bring together the supposed opposing forces of sex and the Divine. In Glam Slam Prince says, “Cum a butterfly straight on your skin. You go for me and eye come again!”. Again, this is not Prince being nasty to just be nasty. He’s trying to point out how spiritually uplifting sex can be if it’s done in a loving, non-selfish manner. In a sense, one could even picture that their skin is the church, and sperm is holy water--showering you with spiritual energy.

I know this quazi-philosophical elements may be too much for some, and to others, a bit amateurish and not well thought-out. But like John Lennon’s Imagine the beauty and genius of his lyrics isn’t in how well thought out they are, but in their idealistic purity--in their...dare I say it, Innocence.

And if that doesn’t make your butthole pucker up, and your hands reach towards heaven at the same time, I don’t know what will.

Viva la Prince! pray

Not sure why people are giving you crap for this. I thought this was extremely interesting, and it's nice to see someone else think about the music, lyrics, and essence of Prince in a deeper way than, "OMG HE'S GOT A NEW ALBUM IT MAKES ME DANCE AND STUFF!!!!"

Because it's this deeper approach to life that makes up Prince fans. The way he sees the world, and how we agree or at least respect his interpretation.

Imago, your piece can be summarised as: before Prince believed consensual sex is in line with God’s plan for men and women. Sex was sort of a pathway to God. He expressed that belief with some crafty and cryptic lyrics and you love him for it.

But using the same example as you did: gett off, which is the epothomy of all sexualised prince video's, what makes you think it's okay, let alone even possible to lead a life as prince is suggesting there. not even prince can. it's simply too many chicks in that video!!

But more importantly what makes you think consensual promiscuity leads to God?

My belief that consensual promiscuity leading to god would be predicated on the belief that there is even a god at all.

I'm Buddhist you see, so I simply wouldn't by any variation of Prince's beliefs as they evolved over time.

But let's face it---the Prince of old probably gave a better blow job... I mean, of course, if he swung that way. Which there is no proof of.

I was really dissapointed with this answer and left this thread because of it, but since this thread is still going and others have responded much more intelligently, I am going to continue it with them.

It doesnt lead to God. It leads to unwanted pregnancy, aids, stds, and broken lives.

Possibly yes, so that's one reason why I asked.

But I also asked him this because I don't really think Prince is promoting promiscuity on LoveSexy.

If anything, Dan left out the crucial central lines of LoveSexy in his analyses:

The feeling you get when you are falling in love not with a boy or a girl but with the heavens above - LoveSexy!

Prince sings about the feeling of falling in love not the act of loving or having sex. And not just any love either. He is talking about falling in love with the heavens above, not with pussy and ass below.

So even if acting promiscuous could be seen as "loving", Dan's interpretation is already clearly wrong, because Prince is talking about a feeling, not an act.

And even if Prince would be cryptically talking about the act of (promiscuous) sex, he is not talking about actually doing it, but only talking about it. This point is proven by the lines:

Tonight we make love with only words

Prince is actually trying to transcend the physical, not worship it. The worshipping is for the spiritual.

consensual promiscuity is one thing, but love = sex = god is kind of another thing imo.

i think his ultimate message was that love = god and ideally sex as a perfect expression of love.

i think there is also a before and after prince, as in his conversion to JW, as reflected in his art and recently changed and edited lyrics.

The latter I completely concur with. That is evident.

I also agree that the message clealry was God = Love and not God = Sex = Love= Consensual Promiscuity. Dan hasn't listen too well to Anastesia.

It's an intelligent written piece by dan, leading to an intersting discussion, but it's not thoroughly analysed, nor well thought out, because he picks and chooses rather insignificant lines to support his interpretation and ignores the core message of LoveSexy's lyrics.

In my view LoveSexy is actually a story (like he says in Eye No: I have a story to tell).

A story about his and/or others experience with heaven and hell. Hell is cryptically referred to as extreme loneliness and depression, hang out with the crowd, drug use and sexual promiscuity without love.

After the most beautiful girl in the world opened up his eyes, he woke up from his bad dream, realised "God is Love", called "His name" and was "found" by God.

THAT "meeting" introduced him to the feeling you get when you are falling in love, not with a boy or a girl, but with the heavens above - LoveSexy.

Well, that this feeling called "LoveSexy" is a sexy feeling is obvious, since it is in the name itself already. There is no doubt, and on that I do believe Imago is on point, that Prince is a master in conveying his thoughts in a lyrically sexy and arousing manner. In this song and context however, I do believe that the sexiness is a means to metaphorically describe that feeling of falling in love with the heavens above. That this feeling is as good as having sex or possibly even better. So yes, there is nastiness in its description, and it isn't at all that sex itself is judged negatively or excluded (because for example in When2Rinlove it is really directly about two lovebunnies making love). However the context in which the song and feeling of LoveSexy is written says that this sexy feeling is about something different ("I'll make love to you tomorrow..." therefore saying not now, because now is the time to glorify LoveSexy), something sex comes close to, but is even higher and better than that.

Which is all the more reason for him to glorify it like he does.

Well that this feeling called "Love Sexy" is also sexy is obvious, since it is in the name al;ready. There is no doubt, and on that I do believe Imago is on point with that, that Prince is a master in writing sexy, arousing lyrics. In this song and context however, I do believe that the sexiness he puts into it is a means to metaphorically describe that feeling of falling in love with the heavens above. That this feeling is as good as having sex or possibly even better. So yes, there is nastiness in it, and it isn't at all that sex in anyway is judged negatively, but the context in which it is written refers to something different, something that comes close, but is higher than that.

I think in his previous works (and much of his material sense then), Prince made a clear distinction between love and sex. It's even part of a monologue he offered during his performances of Computer Blue during the Purple Rain era. However, in LoveSexy, the overall understanding I gather is that he attempts to make them part of the same continuum.
"Cum a butterfly straight on your skin" would have been something he said before LoveSexy merely for sexual expression. In LoveSexy, he asserts that the sexual experience is very much a healthy thing, loving, spiritual thing. It's sort of his own personal sexual liberation and realizing that sex can be viewed as something separate from love, but isn't it sweeter if its viewed as an expression of love itself, and ultimately something divine?
He echoes this over and over again in the album. In "eye wish U heaven" he states "4 ur every kiss, I wish U love, I wish U heaven", reinforcing that a sexual act (kissing--let's face it, kissing is first base in the sex game) is something he considers to be worthy of the divine.
I think the overall post was meant more to point out how Prince's views of sex than they were to diagnose LoveSexy. Either way, imago gets what he wants as people even bother to diagnose a thread I'm willing to bet he spit out just for amusement.

Yes, I agree with most of that in the sense that Prince has always wanted to ease his feeling of guilt to God for his sexual lusting with love, and Love and Sex are almost perfectly fused on this album, because it is called LoveSexy already.

But you can't leave the Love = God part out of it, and the feeling you get from falling in love with God.

I do agree that he is trying to melt Love and Sex and God together. Like I said, as he does in When 2R in Love where he paints a picture of two people in love having sex and experiencing the heavens/God/Love above. Sex can therefore be a heavenly experience,

But that is not sexual promiscuity, on the contray even. That is two people in love. And on that Imago is way off point.

And wait a minute, he doesn't write "cum" in GlamSlam. He writes "come". And if it would mean "cum", what does that really mean then, "cum a butterfly straight on your skin"? Does that mean a butterfly is ejaculating on your skin? Good gawd, that doesn't sound sexy to me.

In Glam Slam (I pray you always stay) and LoveSexy (I don't want to make love 2 u) I think he tries to tell us what the feeling of experiencing heaven is like, by using sex as a metaphor. It feels alot like sex to experience heaven, but it is even better than that.

Moreover, I think the reason to put so much sex into the lyrics is to persuade the listener to fall in love with the heavens above.

Sex sells, as Prince knows all too well. That's why preaches and uses gospel so much on this album. It's an album that uses sex to glorify God/Love by saying that is as good as Sex or even better.

Well yes, Imago alwas gets the attention he needs, but that's ok. I always like to discuss this album and he did make a couple of good points, so this thread isn't so bad.

I don't think sex is being used as a metaphor. It's simply being redefined by him. He doesn't abstract it. He uses metaphors to describe it, but it's very much real and concrete. That's what "denial mutually exclusive forces of sex and God" in the thread title is pointing out. Cause I think Prince is saying they aren't exclusive but part of the same energy, to be used or abused--our choice. That's not to say LoveSexy isn't a spiritual album. Indeed, Prince calls it a gospel album. Only that sex isn't used as an abstraction for the spiritual, but more as a complimenting facet of the spiritual, one we can see, smell, feel, taste, etc.

interesting points. i also think maybe prince is sly, a real sense of humor in the way he mixes the divine/true love connection with the carnal/one night stand.

consensual promiscuity is one thing, but love = sex = god is kind of another thing imo.

i think his ultimate message was that love = god and ideally sex as a perfect expression of love.

i think there is also a before and after prince, as in his conversion to JW, as reflected in his art and recently changed and edited lyrics.

THAT "meeting" introduced him to the feeling you get when you are falling in love, not with a boy or a girl, but with the heavens above - LoveSexy.

mmm hmm. and also maybe prince is right - we, his fans, tend to read into his lyrics the things we expect to see, or want to see. plus, he is sort of .. cryptic at times.
