Major chain release?

How willing do you think Prince is to release his new album(s) through a major chain such a Wall-mart, Best-buy etc? And if he is, what does this mean for an international release?

I would believe that Prince would be very interested in distributing through Wall-mart, especially when they have reached the point of purchasing a satellite. cool

The only way I can see it is if the chain pays P up front. Then, the chain is stuck with 500,000 copies of a cd and no one to purchase it.

I don't think that all of these chain releases have sold that great. Especially the DVDs. I remember reading that Mariah and Justin Timberlake both suffered in the sales department when they did their Best Buy only dvds.

Good lord! I sure hope Prince doesn't sign an exclusive deal with Wal-Mart. I refuse to shop there for numerous reasons. And such a deal would really diminish my image of him quite a bit and in some ways cheapen the music. I could at least live with a Target deal if it came to it. I have issues with Starbucks, too, but they did wonders for Joni Mitchell's last release.

I don't think Target does too many exclusive releases. I know they do the "Target Editions" of cds, but not sure about distribution.

It doesn't bother me with it being a Wal-Mart exclusive as long as I don't have to go to their stores.

Making deals with specific stores seems to work rather well for some artists with sizable fan bases but little current radio appeal.

Olivia Newton-John has done deals with Hallmark, Wallgreens, and Target for 3 recent album releases and they've all reportedly sold well.
