Sorry to say it guys, but George Michael's version (released in the same year as Princes FYI), is probably better.
Prince's version sounded like he had Kirky J. producing it - and I never was a fan of his drumming nor production - Don't get me started on "1999: The New Master"

Maybe I'm too sensitive or feel things too strongly, but I listened to this song and it made me cry, then I tried listenin to it again and I had to stop it halfway cause it made me feel depressed. It's a beautiful song but my fragile heart can't handle the heartache it carries.  I swear the words "HATER" is wayyy over-rated...smh | |

Genesia, maybe you're unto something here. After all it is a person finally realizing they have to let go of the one sided love they've held unto. I do understand your opinion about the lyrics & tempo. This song is over five minutes long. IMO - No matter the reason they held onto false hope. I know someone lived these lyrics. Sure enough had the talent to write them feelings down (pathetic or not). And is now  from laughter when the royalties check arrive. The upstroke.
