Prince's version of Sade's Sweetest Taboo. Prince's version of Sade's Sweetest Taboo.
I remember the download being available at npgmusicclub, although I never heard the song. What did everyone think about it? I thought that it was nice that Prince donated money 2 the Hurrican Katrina Situation. Did any of U have family or friends that went through that? And if so, how are they doing now? I had some family and friends scattered throughout Mississippi. They all survived however relatives in Pass Christian had to move. I just wanted to start an appreciation thread about Prince's dedication to different charitable causes. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

well, it wasn't a cover of a sade song, though she's referenced in the title.
i thought it was cool of him to crank out a single for charity the way he did.

The song was okay (I bought it because of the donation). I thought Brand New Orleans was better... We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Who will b a guest in Ur tent? Certainly not the ones who don't wanna repent And keep giving guns 2 the poorest of our nation's sons Who is gonna call U by name? With no confusion, trinity or preacher's vain? Who says that everytime and opens up the eyes of the blind? Who will b the 1 in his bed? certainly not the 1's who put thorns on his head and wished him dead while they took his daily bread. Which 1 is of value to U? The 1 depleting the oil supply or the One that renews it And keeps the peace... Like the groove in Sade's sweetest taboo. Who will b a guest in Ur tent? R U gonna b happy with how Ur life has been spent? Did u have open arms 4 each and everybody U met Or did U let them die in the rain? Endless war, Poverty or hurricane... It's time 4 another groove... Like Sade's Sweetest Taboo.

From what was reported on the Music Club at that time is that he had Sade's Sweetest Taboo playing in a loop while watching footage of what was going in New Orleans and writing the song.
S.S.T. is short for that and also stands for Sea Surface Temperature. Silence Speaks A Thousand Words.

I was just listening to this the other day...I love how SST and Brand New Orleans blend together...our boy plays all instruments and voices...amazing. More amazing is that he did it all in one night. Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Brand New Orleans is an instrumental take on SST if I recall. I have the CD single around here somewhere, it was released by Sony/Columbia. |

Brand New Orleans is not an instrumental version, but rather an instrumental ending of S.S.T...Prince felt like jamming the song out, and got two songs out of it.
We're still waiting for the MJ/R Kelly relief song... Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

u know what is crazy? On KCRW, a radio station out herein L.A. , a like 10 minute version of S.S.T. with Brand New Orleans was played, a few weeks after it's release. It had a lil more bass added and between the two tracks intejecting, it had a few more give it to me's n stuff said. It was funky but only accessable thru real player. I heard it was a remix done by D.J. Rashida. Luved it. Can't get my hands on it...kind of like Scarlett Johanson. Silence Speaks A Thousand Words.

I wouldn't be surprised if P gave the tracks to a few different people to remix. As I recall, Plantlife did a remix of SST as well. That one wasn't so great though. |

^^ Isn't DJ Rashida member or at least at one time, of Plant Life? Silence Speaks A Thousand Words.

Possibly. She wasn't with them when I performed on the same bill as them a couple of years ago, at least not that I recall. I hung out with Jack Splash a bit though, cool guy. Plant Life's remix of "SST" had completely different instrumentation to the original though. I guess it's possible that Rashida gave them the parts to do their remix. |
