Contrary to what a recent interview with the New Yorker is reporting, a source close to the rocker tells us that Prince was grossly misquoted and misinterpreted as not down with gay rights.

Apparently, the interviewer did not even use a recorder when she spoke with His Holy Purpleness, and that when she called his people to fact check, it turned out she had several factual inaccuracies, including a little bit about Prince recovering from hip surgery, which he never even had. Like Prince is really made of bones or something and not nebulous gold glitter - come on!

What His Purpleness actually did was gesture to the Bible and said he follows what it teaches, referring mainly to the parts about loving everyone and refraining from judgment.

That sounds better, considering he's a man who caused his own Controversy!

as for the hip surgery thing, well, that rumor has been floating around for several years, and if prince was limping around the house during the interview, it wouldn't be hard to make that connection...which is why fact checkers exist. and which is why a hip surgery wasn't published as fact in the final article.

I don't care about what he thinks about gay marriage, although back in the 80s there was a rumour going around about Prince telling W&L they'll both end up in hell for their lesbian lifestyle.

This is a very intersting topic, but I postulate that the idea that Prince is somehow seperate from they gay community is laughable.

Prince has always been part of a certain segment of the gay community whether he acknowledges it or not. If you were to take a survey of the org (or housequake, or even the users who frequented that strange 3121.com site), I guarantee you'd have a disproportionately high percentage of gay and bisexual men compared to the general population or even the Madonna fan population.

I can count on one hand the number of frequently posting heterosexual men in the General Discussion forum, and at least twice that many of gay men who frequently post. And although there's a sketchy correlation at best between frequently posting on fansites, and representing the general Prince fan population as a whole, I would place the number of gay Prince fans at at least 30 percent of the overall fan population.

In short, Prince lives in his mansions and posh suites in part because of his gay fan population. Have you folks seen just how gay the General Discussion forum is? It's about as gay as this forum is dogmatically disturbing.

His stage shows always presented scantily clad women, but there were always men in thongs to accompany them. There's always been a bi-curious streak to most of his performances. Remember the one of the Game boys mounting him simulating anal sex during his Arsenio Show performance of Daddy Pop?

And the list goes on and on. Even bootlegs like "School yard" have a playful insinuation that Prince is very aware of what his buddy is sexually capable of doing to a female friend of theirs...the flirtation with the obvious is HOW does Prince know this of his male friend? Once could easily explain away that perhaps he knows cause guys brag about such conquests to each other. But Prince knows this is his easy out. He counts on there being more than one way to interpret the lyric.

Prince's lyrics, persona, and the like have always flirted with bisexuality and homosexuality--The politically correct and equally thin veneer of a term thrown on top of this is 'gender bending'--but let's face it, sometimes our boy is pretty damned gay.

That being said, why would prince's comments offend the gay community? He's speaking about a matter of faith. His comments about "sticking this here or there" could equally apply to straight men and the need to remain faithful to your lover.

And since when has Prince ever told the truth about anything in an interview before anyways? The press serves 2 purposes for him--to create a buzz over an upcoming release/project, and an opportunity for him do damage control or win folks over. I won't bother speculating as to his reasons for lying to the press all the time as that's his business, but he's proven to be an adequate and frequent liar to the press.

Any supposed apology that he might owe the gay community should be, at the very least, taken with a grain of salt.

Well if the gay community is offended that can't be helped. Everyone wants choice as long as it goes along with their choice. I would offend a lot of people with some of my beliefs but I can't change to suit someone's opinion of me. If something offends you, stay away from it. Don't try to change it, just move on with your life.

That being said, those that want to offend are wrong as well. To be made to feel less than human is a horrible feeling. Live your own lives, don't try to live others.
