NEW YORK (AP) — A perfume company is claiming that Prince and his music publisher failed to honor a contract to help market a fragrance named for the album "3121."

The breach-of-contract lawsuit was filed by Revelations Perfume and Cosmetics Inc. in New York. The company says it licensed Prince's name, likeness and the album title "3121" to market its fragrance.

Revelations says it put $2.5 million into the project and agreed to pay Universal half of net profits from sales of the perfume.

But the lawsuit claims that since the launch of the fragrance in July 2007, Universal and Prince have failed to participate in various promotions for it.

Universal did not immediately return a call for comment. Prince's music studio in Chanhassen, Minn., did not answer several calls.

Anyone who goes into business with Prince & doesn't expect this sort of crap is a moron. Hell, when I buy a new CD, before I even look at the liner notes, I make sure to check there's actually a CD in the case!

Hell, he quits promoting his own albums about a month and a half after their release. So, at least his behaviour is consistent.

Prince: "Have you smelled the product, your honor?"

Prince (using Camille voice) : "Lord, that shit is stanky!"

Judge: "Case dismissed."

Hmm, smells like Karma decided to pay Prince a visit.

But didn't the Macy's concert on 7/7/07 promote the fragrance?

.
[Edited 11/17/08 22:03pm]

I wouldn't call ONE in-store appearance a true promotion. Maybe if he had done different Macy's across the country, that would be different. Hell, all he did was that ONE promotion and took he happy-ass to London to do 21 Nights. Then, we never heard from him again (not to mention he shut his site down).

That's true. I don't recall him thoroughly promoting an album since Emancipation. Maybe you can count TRC, but he only did the ONA tour...nothing else.

I wonder what happened here. I remember meeting the CEO and his staff in Minneapolis and everyone seemed so excited and positive about the launch. There was even talk about expanding it to incense and candles and other aroma products. i'm thinking maybe national retail stores did not greet it with open arms, and Prince didn't want to put in the effort. I would still think he would have to compensate the company for the promotional costs.

ELIZABETH TAYLOR

Think for a moment... she shot a commercial for her fragrance DIAMONDS what, when she was with that guy Larry. That's 20 years ago maybe. Anyone seen her lately?
This Christmas they will pull out that old film and run the commercial. It kind of preserves her beauty.

Prince should promote this perfume. Then 20 years from now when we can't bear to look at him we can remember what a pretty man he was... hee hee princey!

You wonder what happened? You KNOW exactly what happened! Prince threw out some crap and just knew his base (you, me, us) would buy it all up. No marketing necessary. I don't know about you but I don't waste my money on just any ol' crap, I don't care who shits it out! Now maybe if it'd come from the Prince I once adored, perhaps but this new guy, oh please!

I don't think Mani uses the same company for her incense/candle line.

confused Way to jump to conclusions that don't even make sense. Why would a perfume company sue Prince on behalf of his ex-wife? confuse (Especially when said perfume company is not affiliated with said ex-wife?)

Well, imo it's pretty clear the "speculation" is unfounded. I'm pretty confident that Gamillah/Altru is not affiliated with Revelations Perfume so I guess it would be time to come up with another theory.

Oooh, I have one. How about Prince (and Universal) didn't fulfill their end of the CONtract so Revelations is sueing for breach of contract? wink
