Prince and the four seasons

To prevent any confusion, I'm talking about these SEASONS: spring, summer, fall/autumn and winter NOT the hotel chain

falloff someone was bound to ask

I forget the work we were studying, but in my English class in my senior year of high school, we were talking about the 4 seasons and how they represent different segments of our lifetimes as such:

Spring is the season of birth, renewal and new beginnings.
Summer is where you're in the prime of your life and you have a grip on who you are as a person.
Fall/autumn is where you start winding down, slowing down, etc.
Winter is symbolic of dying and death.

I got to thinking: which Prince albums would fall into each of these categories? He has so much music out there and so many albums, he has to have at least one for each category. This is what I have worked out so far:

Spring: TGE, LoveSexy, Emancipation
Summer: Purple Rain, Emancipation
Fall/Autumn: NewPower Soul
Winter: Come, Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic

*Given that Emancipation is three discs long, a number of songs can make it fit into either one of those categories.

Me too, I thought you was gonna compare prince's voice with Frankie Valli's or something.

Okay, now that we've settled that debate.... rolleyes completely slipped my mind that it was the name of a group also (also known as the Jersey boys razz )

...would anyone mind answering whatever I proposed regarding Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter?

U know Dreamy...I think it might be difficult to do this with whole albums, but I know I can do it with songs, under this interpretation of the seasons.

Play in the Sunshine~ Is very Spring, the song and the words are very youthful and newcomming.
Same December~Is Summer in my eyes, because it has that balance of noticing both sides of a reality, which is something we grow into during the Summer of our lives, whereas the song..."Sex in the Summer," would favor a cliche here.
In Love~I believe is a song that sounds like the comfort that comes with welcoming the golden years of your life, especially if it is in the arms of love.
Blue Light~is a Winter warm knowing that love has been found and your life has been worthwhile because it was in search of love to sleep with, that is if our dreams of love come true.
If we find ourselves alone in the winter of our lives, and sleep with a dream that did not come true, it is better that we dreamed all of the days of our lives than to not have dreamed at all...That would be a comfortable blue...that can at least leave the faithful door of your heart open.

I agree with your choice, Tame. I appreciate you giving your twocents on this topic. I never would have thought of it that way.

I try to look at the albums as a whole. With some, its hard to do that because for every cohesive concept album, there's an album full of variety in genres & subjects. The latter is difficult to really fit into a category (in this case a season).

I know for sure that the following albums are concept albums:

Around the World in a Day
Controversy
LoveSexy
Come
Musicology

some of these are difficult to even put in a category.

LoveSexy is about finding a brand new understanding of one's spirituality. The overall message is sort of a rebirth, but certain songs can be seen as "summer" because they speak of Prince in his prime. And Anna Stesia could be seen as an autumn or winter because he faces adversity and might not come out of it "alive" so to speak.

Come marks the death of "Prince." The bells you hear in the background in the first and last tracks remind me of sleigh bells which I find synonymous with falling snow. The album overall comes off a bit depressing when it comes to the end and it sounds like he's breaking away, ending that one life and working on beginning the next.

shrug just to give a couple of examples

rem...just a little infor here...winter is not necessarily a depressive season. It just depends on ure point of view. U can see winter as a time of hibernation, re-energising and change...so some of his songs about those things could be considered winter as well
