A-U-T-OMATIC appreciation This is definitely one of my fav if not the fav song off the 1999 album. Not only is the album itself a masterpiece and among Prince's best work but he was downright at his narcissistic best. This song was underrated and under appreciated IMHO - it is definitely one of the strongest cuts on the album. The video was a stretch beyond his usual stage performance/rehearsals and the bondage scene at the end with Lisa and Wendy was incredibly sexy and amusing especially when Dr. Fink starts doing his air traffic controller bit as the bed comes in. Lisa never drops her cigarette and Jill never removes her shades. I think Prince felt very sexy when performing this song. Its sexy without being cocky (no pun intended) and again we witness Prince's obsession with a virgin who only has desire for him. Well, whaddya think?

Isn't it funny how this 1983 video depicted P being tied to a bed topless and whipped by two chicks, yet Madonna was sooo controversial when Erotica had a bondage theme 8 YEARS LATER!!! Difference is, Madonna tries to court controversy, Prince wrote it! Booyah! Take it - like Clarence said:

That's probably the coolest part of the song. When I first heard this, though the length had me  after a while, I knew that this would become one of my favorites on that particular album. Now I love it for its length because he just goes all over the board here.
The video, I've seen a couple of times...  hard to watch at first, but then again so was "Darling Nikki"... mostly because of the content. I don't so much get the pilot's cap he's wearing in that video is that an allusion to the song "International Lover" where he's the captain, or does it have to do with being on "Auto-pilot"
One thing I've always wondered... the 30-40 seconds where you hear Lisa & Jill "torturing" Prince, why are they crying? it makes no sense. I thought they liked torturing him. I've always loved this song! Easily one of the best songs on 1999, and easily the most over-looked.
I love the passion he sings with. True, it's raunchy, but when Prince says "I'll go down on you... all night long... it's automatic!" ... it's like... "Hell yeah"!!! It's funny though, because this song is SO HOT... but I guess it was too hot for radio, and interpretation back then. So many great lines from this song... "You ask me to forgive you, when you know... I'm just an addict".
"I'll look for a needle in a haystack..." "I would never leave you, no matter what you do. So stop the music baby, you know... I'm an automatic fool". I should hope to never one day be so foolish.
This song really ought to be in my Prince top 15! LOVE IT! The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else! |

I think this song is completely under-rated.
It starts off really slow and then builds up more and more intensity. I love it. He's saying whatever happens, whatever you do, I will always love you, it's automatic. I don't know what it is about Prince songs but they always sound so sincere and remind me of a time in my own life when everything was a lot more innocent and life seemed a lot slower and my own friendships were a lot more sincere.
