Come - Prince 1958 - 1993 - Some of his best work?

Hi Prince Fans,

Although I have most of Prince's records (not all), my collection is a mixture of old tapes and CD's. So a couple of months ago, I started replacing my tapes with CD's. As dull as this reads, it made me listen to albums that I'd not listened to for at least 2 hours! (no really, for months & months).

'Come' was one such album. I apologise if this thread has already been done but I just wanted to say how fantastic this album is! (for me)

I beleve it is definately up there with some of his greatest work.

The Guitar work is amazing,(hendrix esk even,- listen to the end of Orgasm)
Some fine vocals (well they never disappoint!)
And some superb tracks like Letitgo, Race, Space, Pheromone really bring out the best in Prince.

There is also a bluesy feel to the album on some of the tracks which for me is an area where Prince excels.

Would be interested to hear what you guys had to say about this album.

Thank you.
I heard the rip when you sat down!

I wouldn't go that far, but it's certainly an album that seems to have aged very well considering it's impact at the time.

The 93/94 period the material was culled from produced a lot of strong tracks, I think Come could've been even stronger had it kept a few of the earlier tracks on there like Endorphinmachine, or even Interactive.

Come is a great album. Dark is one his most haunting and classy ballads and his vocals at the end rival any other vocal delivery in his canon of work.

Papa has a great groove and is all the better for it's disturbing commentary.

Although some of the tracks sound a bit rushed and few of them represent what he is truly capable of as a songwriter, the album really works as a whole and in terms of sitting down and actually listening to an album beginning to end, I definately find it one of his most rewarding.

And the cover is cool as fuck.

Come is one of those albums that, when it's good, it's very, very good and when it's bad, it's horrid.

Very, very good...

Come
Space
Pheromone
Dark
Letitgo

The poem that runs through it all (Part of which ended up in 21 Nights - did you notice?)

Horrid...

Solo
Orgasm

On balance, it's one of my favorite albums.

I think Come is a very underrated album. I mean, Pheromone and Loose and Race and Papa and Dark and Solo are great songs. nod

The album version of Come is a great and very sexy extended version of the unreleased track. razz

The only track I don't really like is Letitgo. It was a late addition to the album and isn't really one of the one-word titled tracks that makes up the rest of the album. confused

Compared to what Prince has done in the last 10 years, "Come" is great. But compare it to what he did up to Sign O The Times and it sucks.

Come is very good, imo, but also uneven. As someone else said when it's good it's very good, but when it's bad...
I prefer the original sequence that included Interactive, Endorphinmachine and Strays of the World. To scrap those and replace them with the bland "letitgo" was a mistake. It spoiled a would-be classic. But then again, Prince wanted The Gold Experience to be regarded as a classic, not Come.

93-96 i think was one of his best eras. just he put Come and Choas and Disorder in a bad sequence because of his battle with WB.

the Dawn would have been an awesome album.

One of his best? lol

Now I don't know about that.

It'd say its around the middle of the pack for me cool

But I dig it for:
Space, Letitgo, Pheromone, Dark, Loose! and Solo. I know a lot of people hate this one, but it feels more like the centerpiece of the album, ultimately explaining why a lot of people felt his heart wasn't in this project.
And Letitgo makes for a good resolution cool

My top albums are mostly from the 80's lol but as far as 90's go... I'm still not sure. All of the 90's albums I own are great in their own way. I find it hard to discriminate razz

Come is a "very good" album... not great, not terrible.

I LOVE the title track. Come just puts me in a zone. The part where Prince is just goin' off... screaming... and really getting into the song about 3/4 through is unbelievable! It's as though the man is really "in the mix".

I could do without the slurps... lol... but it's an amazing song!

The segue into Space, and Space itsself... is wonderful. Great tune.

After that Dark and Letitgo are cool... and Papa is just "interesting" I suppose.

I could do without Race and Solo... but as a whole, I enjoy this album. Not one of my faves, but Come is one of my favorite Prince singles.

I still rock to that in my car on Friday and Saturday nights when I'm in "pimp" mode. smile
The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

"Come," has always got me dancing...I spent many years in an antique home built in 1875...My stereo was in the dining room and there was nothing like the sound coming off of these hard wood floorz...I miss the acoustics there...I haven't heard music as clear and romantic since, and although I had two husbands in that home, neither one of them listened to music like I did. cool

I find Come to be one of Prince's best 90's albums. It's different, which is good. Papa is a brilliant song... but very disturbing. I absolutely love Leititgo. The symbol album would almost be perfect except for the presence of Tony. The Gold Experience is good, but it doesn't resonate with me like it did when I started listening to it (in '99 I think).

Come is a little more subdued. I little more classy (sans the ridiculous Orgasm track).

I think that maybe it's an underrated album because it doesn't have the wild funk that fans expect. It still has the wacky sexual content, but it's a slower, smarter, softer, and darker album than most.

Come is an under-appreciated album. Perhaps the reviewers didn't give it appropriate attention. While it's not a new Purple Rain or Sign O The Times, it contains several very good songs like Come, Space, Pheromone and Letitgo.

I still remember when I bought the tape the day it came out (I was a Prince fan for some time but "Come" was the first I bought on its day of release) and I was shocked to find out that "TMBGITW" wasn't there and I never heard any of the songs. But wow what a great album it was. It was always on my headphones.
Yes to me it is one of his best and along with "The Gold Experience" his best 90s album. I never understood why people seem to hate it so much. Each and every song is great and it has few songs (like an 80s album) which means it is impossible to get tired of it . And a lot of different styles too. 10/10 from me

I count myself among those who believe "Come" to be Prince's best album of the '90s. I think the proposed 3-LP opus "The Dawn" (which would have combined the albums "Come" and "The Gold Experience" and also added tracks from that era that later surfaced on "Crystal Ball"--e.g., "Endorphinmachine," "Acknowlege Me," and "Strays of the World" as well as [possibly] some "Chaos and Disorder" songs, IIRC) SHOULD have been allowed to be released by WB. Had it been released I think it would've been HUGE, and I definitely know it would have been in my Top 5 Favorite Prince albums! nod

A few years ago an orger did a thread detailing his extensive research on the '93-'95 period (one of the greatest threads I've ever seen and well worthy of archival). It covered EVERY configuration of EVERY project Prince worked on in those years. BorisFishpaw was a heavy contributor to this thread. Can anyone link to the thread I'm remembering? EDIT: Found the original thread! http://prince.org/msg/7/101499 as well as a follow-up thread http://prince.org/msg/7/105603

Has anyone ever configured their own 3-disc set of "The Dawn," and if so, would he/she please post the tracklist? I want to try my hand at throwing one together...what a wealth of great songs from this time period! headbang

This album is kind of like the "Around the World in a Day" of the 90's. Pretty experimental, but compared to some of the "titans" of the decade, it pales in comparison.

One thing I will say about Come that puts it above a lot of Prince's albums is the fact that its songs flow well into one another (with the aid of the segues otherwise known as the remains of "Poem"). All of the songs are generally R&B, experimental and the album consists of tracks that go back to songs he'd written before (given the lyrics), but musically, they give the impression that Prince is experimenting with new techniques.
When looked at from a certain way, they tell the tale of Prince's "last hours" before he supposedly died and was reborn as prince (i.e. the name change).

Though it gets somewhat depressing towards the end with Dark & Solo, its a very artistic approach and in its way, I certainly can appreciate it. Not sure if I can say its one of the best, but its nothing less than interesting cool
