I was wondering the same exact thing 2 days ago but was to lazy to start a post smile I looove his 90's work, for example The Gold Experience is in my top 3 favorite albums. All the songs like Shhh, Endorphinmachine, Gold and even the late 90s stuff like Rave Un2 The Joy fantastic and The greatest romance ever sold are amazing tunes

What could possibly compare to albums like SOTT, Purple, 1999, and Parade? The 90's get buried by the greatness of the 80's, and this is coming from a guy who enjoys a lot of the 90's albums (TGE, The Truth, etc.).

Do we have to make a choice? I love bits of both.

But I have to admit, if I had to pick a top three at least two would come from the 80s.....

Yes but im sure that if it wasnt for all that Warner/name change crap, His music of the Symbol era would of got more much more attention, praise and even called another period of "Greatness" it is anyway in my opinion. I mean if u even look at Wacko Jacko he was a God in the public eye and as soon as the first allegation hit, the media started..and when the media start..fucking every1 else jumps on the band wagon nod I mean it was the british media who came up with the name "Wacko Jacko" and look how that caught on lol Its sad that people dont focus as much on how good the music anymore..what they do in there private life and the choices artists make seem 2 be much more important..then again if it wasnt for the warner feud we wouldnt have had the great albums Come nor Chaos and Disorder ...so i suppose its worth it in a way biggrin ...but i could cry when i think how much great music this man made threw the 90s and how so many people over-look it cry I mean I was playing Chaos and Disorder 2day and am mate of mine called round and asked "whos this its great" I repiled "Prince why?" and I had 2 do him a copy! By the way John (my mate) hes always said he didnt even like Prince...and funnly enough thats an album most Purple-Hippies consider "throw-away" material neutral

it seems like his music got better after he changed his name 2 the unprounceable symbol in 1993.it even got better when he married mayte but after they broke up it just kinda went downhill espicially when he became a JW.

Why on earth would you wanna forget Lovesexy???

There are several albums from the 90's that are better than ATWIAD

Maybe Diamonds & Pearls but ATWIAD is better then every other 90's album. (And no, TGE is not better than ATWIAD. TGE is so over-rated.....)

I get just as much joy from For You and Prince as I do from 1999 and Purple Rain. Then give me some Sweet baby or And God Created Woman and I am happy. How about The Dance or The Love We Make or Come On to Call My Name! Good Lord we are lucky fans. The 70's, 80's, 90's, and 00's are pretty much equally amazing..I suggest listening to every album over and over and over again.

I personally like the 90's stuff better..... (and
very late 80's)
I was not really crazy about "The Revolution".. I know I know..
every one is gonna freak with me saying that..... I mean
I LIKED their music.. but to me the band was D~U~L~L
I will ALWAYS like the NPG with Tony, Damin and Kirk, Mayte,
Michael B.. etc.. they were fun and funky and I love the
nasty stuff Prince put out and all the swearin'..
It just made his stuff so much more fun.
Plus Prince was SOOOOO cool back then. When I saw him in 93
he actually SPOKE To me when I gave him a stuffed animal and
he was so cute when he hugged it.. biggrin NOW with all this
JW stuff he would probably just throw it back at me.....
((or not even take it))
But being a Prince fan from almost the beginning.. I do love
ALL his music..... Just wish he would put out MORE!!!!!

I love the 80's time periods because every album/tour/video Prince would change his music styles and image. Some of the 90's became NPG and things became more static and didn't change. On the other hand I always enjoyed the NPG 90's albums when he played the New stuff live. Why?? Cuz Prince did many greatest hits tours in the 96's into 2000's that were simply a lot of the 80's material, so hearing Days of Wild..etc was always a retreat. After time I just got burned out on the 80's stuff and enjoyed some of the new stuff that came along in the live show. Still believe he is in a safe zone for a long long time when it comes to recording. Maybe he worked hard enough throughout to belong in the safe zone.

In the 90's when he got his freedom it seemed like he didn't have to impress WB with something new that would kick them and the record buying public in the ass. Prince's competition is Prince. I still would love to see him record something very diverse, experimental yet catchy. Prince moving away from the 90's NPG soul sound and into complete a complete experimental area would rock IMO. It's his music and he really loves the funk.

I guess in the 80's we were guessing what will he do next? Now in 2000's we are wondering how will he repeat what he did already? Damn, and thats why I love something like Chaos and Disorder because he never really did go do that garage band route until then. After emancipation much of the albums were more alike. Rainbow Children was cool and out there. But much of the NPS sound is a repeat.

I guess the ultimate answer is he does have the freedom to record some NPG Funk, rock, experimental noise...etc..etc. It's up to him and he is sitting on so much loot it does matter either way.

I still believe he has it in him to record something that will knock everyone that hears it to the ground. When he does reach that point I know we will all know.

Growing up in the 80's and seeing it all unfold it was amazing seeing Prince change his sound, live show, theatrics, image almost year to year. Dip deep and take a look at how it did all unfold. Don't lump the 80's into the 80's. Every year was like 3 years in the 80's for Prince vs. the competition, he was more likely to pimp the new album and tie it into the live show back in the day.

80's win but does everyone wanna hear the same hits played live again and again? Albums and tours are different. But he has to play to the masses sometimes.

I don't like his 90s work more but I like it a lot. Some think that his 90s work is not close to his 80s work. I think it's close. The major difference is that media and casual listeners moved away in the 90s, but the songs are, in many cases, almost as strong. Space, I Hate U, The Other Side Of The Pillow - top notch songs.

Since I have listened to his 80s work so much, it becomes natural to listen to his 90s and 00s work the majority of the time.

I became a fan basically from "Gett Off", "Diamonds And Pearls" album and "Symbol". I discovered the 80s stuff later although I was aware of his earlier hits. OK I am a big 80s music freak in general so no I don't enjoy his 90s albums more. The 80s were better. That said however I personally think that Prince started going downhill from 1996 onwards. Albums such as "Symbol", "Come" and "Gold Experience" for me are just as good as his 80s work and albums such as "Graffiti Bridge" and "Diamonds And Pearls" were not as good as the ones from the 80s but had their moments. For me Prince from the beginning up to the "Gold Experience" was on fire-unstoppable. Then something went wrong, his music became a bit messed up, he seemed trying too hard to be hip and have hits and although good songs were still present here and there, Prince seemed to have his best days behind him. But now he has recovered from that. From "Rainbow Children" onwards Prince seems to be making music for the sake of the music again and he is on a creative path again. "3121" is probably the weakest album he made since "TRC" and it is still good. So no the 80s/early 90s were the best for me

Some here think that the media fawned over Prince in the 80's, not so
The serious music mags like Rolling Stone did, but not the mainstream media.
The mainstream media HAD to acknowledge him after the succes of Purple Rain, but in a backhanded way,... "the freak", "the midget" playing deviant strange sexual music, kinda like now, but actually the mainstream media gives him a little more respect now than back in the day because of his longevity.

In the early 80's pop raidio payed very little attention to Prince untill Purple Rain, his sound was at contrast to the happy 80's pop, he had more in common with New Wave than pop, and was more accepted on alternative radio stations and black radio than mainstream pop stations.
Thats the way it was here in southern california as i remember.

In the 90's he tried to go in a more pop, radio friendly sound, he wanted hits, but times had changed, there was grunge, rap, newjack, alt-rock, teen pop acts and all kinds of other flavors, and he was trying too hard, not knowing what he was playing sounded silly and outdated to a lot of us who grew up as kids in the 80's
People moved on, Prince stayed behind.
