Was I the only one who was embarassed to buy "Lovesexy" for the first time? I reffering to the cover, NOT the music. WTF was he thinking about when did that cover? ~KiKi

I love that cover, esp on vinyl. Fits the album perfectly.

I know where you're coming from, but the cover is easily Prince's finest visual statement (in my opinion). He's offering himself, completely unarmed and naked, to a much higher 'something' - which is what the concept of Lovesexy was all about (or am I getting it wrong?). However, when it came out I was 18 and it was a little embarrassing taking it to the counter.

I agree. Being an aussie hetrosexual male, I hate it when I'm listening to it and someone comes in and sees that cover - they look at me like WTF? But the music is just too good to ignore because of a cover. I get the same reaction with Parade as well! Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

Well I was only 14 years old when I bought that album, I was teased endlessly about that, same with Parade. ( thank god I had extremely liberal parents!) ~KiKi

Hek No!!! Man I remember I took that record to the counter smiling, got home and made it into a poster as a matter of fact I now have the CD and have it in a place where's I can glance at it every now and then. "SOOO SEXY" I'm just a junky for the sound.

i think the cover alienated people, which is something Prince has always excelled at. It was very embarrasing being a Prince fan in the days of that cover. Not many school kids take to a naked bloke on a cover, and so they took the piss something shocking.
Still, I think it is with Purple Rain, the cover that would be most memorable to non-fans. It has acheived a place in pop culture history, due to either its notority or its sheer daring statement. -----------------------------------------

I was definitely not embarrassed. Then again, I'm a chick, and a pervert to boot. It takes a lot to embarrass me. What a perfect little body! He did need an eyebrow wax something awful tho.

I'm a guy and I was a little embarrassed to buy Lovesexy because of the cover. I HAD to buy it though...one of my favourites.

At least Prince was still a major commercial artist at the time...imagine if he did this today how much more embarrasing it would be to buy the album!

I don't see any reason to be embarassed. You're buying it for the music, not the cover.
and don't you even buy condoms, or tampons? do you feel embarrased then?

Actually I think it was a little bit of both. The record company (Warner Bros.) certainly treated it like a publicity stunt... and maybe just a little bit Prince did too. But, honestly, I think the cover was mostly an artistic statement by Prince. The cover says simply "I am born again" and that is the reason for the nakedness. At the time, Lovesexy was easily Prince's most "spirtual" album. The "spiritual noise" that Prince is making on Lovesexy is very geniune, and that's what made the album so special. Everyone knew Prince's sexual side, but up to that point, Prince only gave vague hints as to how spiritual he really was. Then when Lovesexy came out, all doubt was removed. Lovesexy in my opinion is Prince's spritual "coming out" party. He's testifying. He's saying that I'm born again, and THIS is what I'm REALLY all about... or at least what I'm striving for. That's why I've always been shocked by the negative response that so many fans gave to The Rainbow Children because it seemed to me that Prince had already set the stage for where he was headed a long, long time ago, and anyone who really followed and understood his music/art, would know that. But to each his own I guess. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And now his spirituality has evolved to the point where he won't swear anymore. The spirituality of Lovesexy and TRC are different IMO. Maybe it was the beginning of a long winding road towards to the present...if that's what u mean then I agree. Still this new spirituality encompasses a side of Prince we have not seen before...with the scripture lyrics, controversial race topics. I think Prince's battles with WB and his perception of how he got treated probably have affected him more than anything. Too bad it took a fall from fame for him to reach this point...but I'll take it nonetheless if TRC is the result! He was still talking pretty nasty on Lovesexy...especially the title cut.

Anyone who reaches conclusions about you as a person
on the basis of your owning an album with a naked man on the cover has not fully mentally developed yet. [This message was edited Thu Nov 21 21:56:27 PST 2002 by ecnirpnz]

I avoided buying this album simply because of the cover.Everyone kept saying how great an album it was so I
finally gave in and bought it.No one made fun of me to my face, but deep down I think the cashier dude was laughing inside.I believe a girl could get away with buying that record more than a guy. Needless to say Lovesexy is my favorite Prince album so far.It is a very spiritual record, more so than TRC.It's also very fun and happy.Hell,I might buy it again.

I have to admit,I was a little embarassed buying that record.I mean,I had NEVER bought an album with a nude man on the cover before! I hated all the controversy that this cover caused, because I think it overshadowed a great album.

Bloodyhell - a nude man!!! How embarrassing?!! Jeez, no wonder something so simple and natural as a naked human-being created such "controversy", when people in general make such innane over-reactions. And those of you that claim it was worse because you're a "man" perhaps need to re-evluate what you think makes you a man.

You were Embarassed because he was a man and he was Nude? Well,He wasn't embarassed so why should you be? Did you feel gay? Well that's your Issue. Prince did what he wanted. I didn't feel embarassed buying a record by Prince. He's a Talented Performer who I respect very much.

I cannot really remember when I bought the CD (guess that means I wasn't embarassed). BTW, it's not that bad...I mean it's not that bloody-hell-awful-Controversy-shower-poster.
I wouldn't have bought that!
