It wasn't the marketing as much as the fact that Elvis had no competition. The Black artists were performing in clubs in the Ghetto. Elvis was on TV. Black artists were getting death threats for having all those white girls screaming their names. Elvis was sex symbol with his herky jerky shakin' ass.
