The misogyny in Purple Rain is really tough to endure. I was 13 I think when I saw this movie and it made me sooo sad when he hit her and when Morris dumped a women in a garbage can.

I've always dismissed actions of Prince as a character in the movie as fitting for The Kid's development -- he was influenced by his father and exhibiting the same behavior he detested.

But then how do I explain away the fact that Prince as a writer wrote the garbage can scene. The entire film is so disrespectful of women that I can understand BGZ thinking its a secret part of Prince's psyche.


You know what sickens me a little ... that I easily gloss over all those scenes in my mind just to enjoy the movie because the music scenes and the mystique of the artist are so intoxicating.

I used to always hear during the period of his 1999 album from older girls especially that "Oh, that Prince...He's so nasty. I KNOW he's rough with his women. Ummmhmmm...you can just tell. I bet Prince is a stone freak!". That was usually their sentiments and they expressed that like they got off on it. So I think P worked off of that feedback that he would get so he just worked that into his own persona. Cuz I believe he felt some women dug the fact that he had a dangerous element to him. Especially back then.

When U take the whole movie into consideration, it was bound to come out of "Kid's" character.

It's not like that condition doesn't exist in the world and in families anyway...The fact that the emotion at the end of the film is there due to his father shooting himself is how the emotions tie together.

The movie makes a great point. It shows the condition. The cause and effect it can have on a child, and how that can be used for good.

Okay..Im just going to air some family issues right here because Im going to try and explain something.
My father was very much like Prince's father in the movie, more so like Jake in Once Were Warriors, if u have ever seen that one. He drank a hell of a lot and thought nothing of smacking my mother around when it suited him.
Now I have two brothers, and despite the father we were raised with (until I was 14 and he left) both of them grew into fairly decent human beings. One brother in particular my father loved to run down verbally. This brother was the opposite to my father in every way and treated every girlfriend he had like she was a princess.....
Then one day he was with this woman (they had an on and off realtionship over the years) and they had an argument one night and he just snapped. In the middle of a verbal disagreement he grabbed her around the throat!!
It only lasted mere seconds, but he told me it scared the Hell out of him!! I think he apologised a million times and he never did it again because in that split second he saw himself as capeable of being just like our father.
Maybe thats what Prince was trying to get across in some way, that u can let ureself become just like that parent and all it takes in one second of lost control and bad judgement....or u can change the cycle, not let that control u and and become someone much better.

By the way, my brother has never laid a hand on another woman since
