Like the 1999 album cover thread, (which probably gave u the idea to do this thread) this too has been discussed on here. Many times actually. As far as the song goes, to me, it's one of my all time favorite songs by Prince. But none of the reasons why I've always dug this song has jack to do with the little interplay between Prince and J.J. But dealing with that since this is what this thread is all about; This song, like 95% of all of the songs on this album is about dominating, loneliness, sex, wanting to please and to be pleased, anger. Many times on this album, all of those elements can be found ALL in one song. Prince is many things, but one thing he has never been is stupid. Prince is though very savvy and he's a master at anything that has a double meaning. That has been littered all over his earlier work. Be it religion, sex, whatever. That said, from the performance of P's and Jill's interlude on LCD, Prince is fully aware of the connotation that this gives off. Prince is not naive. Far from it. He's VERY knowing in anything that he does. I believe P walked that fine line in producing a sound that could border rough sex and rape. To listen to Jill, and only Jill, she sounds like she's really into the fucking. She sounds like the sex she's having is making her feel good. Like she's on her way to having an orgasm. She does NOT sound like a woman who is NOT enjoying the sex. She does NOT sound like a woman who is being violated against her will. Prince on the other hand, he does sound like just from some of his tone, that it COULD be just aggression he's taking out on her. The "This is for and that is for" represents that. It's the TONE that comes from Prince that could evoke he's forcing himself onto to Jill. It could be seen by some as rape and then by others, it's not. And P knew that. Again, it's that duality. The way Jill sounds supports that it's just good fucking. The way P sounds like it could be aggression or aggression that went over the line. It's all about perception. And that differs from person to person. It's not like P hasn't ever mentioned rape or provoked rape before. Extra Loveable. BUT again, that song was written for Vanity 6 to perform. So it's not a stretch with all of the gender switching and role reversal that P used to do during the time of this album that it was intended for Vanity to say "I could be very cruel. Don't make me rape u". Just a scenerio. Again, P is very knowing in the things he does. Most of it is designed to where it CAN go either way. That's intentional.

He's giving her a passionate fuck. As she's the cab driver she's the one in control as, assuming it's a normal cab (I always imagine a yellow US one) she'd have had to leave her driving seat and the safety it provides.

It's one of those animal fucks. One of those pure release ones that can often be a domination of the female. But then when you look at it the woman appears to have given herself quite happily and is more than accepting of that which she is getting. Possibly getting off on the domination of it too perhaps. If there's any there that is.

Damn funky song too. One of his best in my opinion.

PS: Glad my missus doesn't make that much noise though. Having lived in a flat for many years of our life (not now though) and also having a daughter we've learnt how to have prison sex when the need arises. how can you even think that it is about a rape? bizarre!

listen carefully to his tone of voice thru his little list of moans it changes from angry with his woes to soft and caring when he says this is for you etc


i dont think this is meant to be ambiguous, its a straight forward sex song

i think its one of princes simplest songs lyrically not really many double entendres - okay i concede 'take me for a ride'


i would suggest that the originator of this post and some others have never heard a woman moan during sex, as that is what jill is doing, moaning with pleasure.



what aspect of the song makes you think its about rape?

the only aggression is in his general pissed off view of the world, but then that is what hes singing about at the very beginning of the song, thats why he doesnt care where hes taken etc



i dont recall prince ever singing about things like rape, he always sings about sex love relationships etc

Wait a minute. Wasn't FUCK originally an abbreviation of forced unnatural carnal knowledge? And doesn't it also mean to treat someone unfairly? That's what the dictionary has.
