Best version of a song I heard him do live:
Controversy/mutiny from the birthday show (wasn't there though). Song I want him most to do live: Mutiny With 'Anotherlover' being a close second.

I like it best when he performs solo. He came out and did 6 or 7 songs by himself when I saw him in Cleveland on the One Night Alone show. What made it even better was that he was playing a piano. I abdicated the throne in Ithaca, but now I am...

Been slowly collecting and listening to these live recordings and here are some of mine favorite live performed songs from the limited concerts I've gotten a hold of:
Atlanta 1980 - Soft and Wet, love the way he arranged this song Jack U OFF - Why U Wanna Treat me So Bad, I love this performance. its amazing cause i really don't like the album version at all. Atlanta 1985 Purple Rain Tour - I Would Die for U/Baby I'm a Star, love this long performance, became aware of it when VH1 showed this video. Dertoir 1986 Hit and Run Tour - Anotherloverholeinyohead, just a great performance. Sign O the Times Live 4-17-1987 - Forever in my Life, as seen in the movie, loved how Prince performed this. Miles from Nowhere 12/31/1987 - When Doves Cry, the only time I;ve heard this live and liked this. Performed this so differently. Lovesexy 1988, Westfallen - Erotic City, so short, but good, Bob George, can't believe it was done live so well. One Night alone Disc - I feel he gave the definitive live version of Nothing Compares 2 U and Joy in Repetition

From the top of my head:
I could never take the place of your man (Sign of the Times tour): This version is so full of joy and energy. And the added horns and hammond organ work really well on this song. Play in the sunshine (Sign of the Times tour): Idem When you were mine (Lovesexy tour): He turns this stripped down new-wave pop-thing into some glorious piece of 'big, american rock' aka Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp. America (live-video from Nice, France, 1986) One big 'chunk' of energy and joy. Eddie M's saxophones on fire. The Revolution are in a tight, swinging form and Prince is in rare top-form: laughing, dancing, flirting, teasing, drumming. Rave unto the joy fantastic (from the live CD 'Second show that night'): Prince is stretching this groovy funk-thing to the limits. Almost leaving the audience breathless. The fast 'doubled' guitar-solo is 'audio-heaven'. Joy in repetition (unknown concert, Larry Graham on bass): You can tell anything about Larry (the JW-thing, his silly suits...), but you can't deny this guy can PLAY bass. His fierce, thumping bass-work on this version works really well with Princes guitar-solo bliss. The Ride (Live in Vegas DVD): His best live-version of this song IMO. First because of the playfull vocals by Prince. Next to that his guitarwork is great of course, but also look at Sheila drumming: she is putting so much power and feeling into it.
