PRINCE, MUSIC & GAMES PRINCE, MUSIC & COMPUTER GAMES
LoveSexy Tour & Sonic The Hedgehog (A V. LONG POST) After my own heart. If I remember correctly, there are two ocasions when Prince breaks into Sonic the Hedge Hog in the LoveSexy Tour 88 (though I could be wrong) for what seems to be just a moment, but I love it. I'm sure someone has said this before, but what song was it? One is in Glam Slam, which I have heard on the recorded version, but I am sure there is another segment of the tour where he does it. I'm trying to remember what Act of Sonic the Hedge Hog features in Glam Slam. Is it Chemical Plant from STHH2? So we know that someone in Prince's camp at least got to level 2. http://video.google.co.uk...l=en&emb=0 In fact, when I was younger, I used the cheat on Sonic the Hedge Hog 1 just to access all the music. I'd listen to it after I completed the game and sometimes, I couldn't even be bothered to play the game, so instead I'd just play the music. It's so inspiring. It's full of different melodies wrapping around each other. I'm in heaven, even when I hear it now. I don't know if Prince is a fan of the game, the music, or both, but I love how he incorporated what I believe is fantastic music (especially for a game), into his own work. Sega are probably happy. Prince even beefs up the STHH part with what sounds like real brass, hitting it at the right places with a string accompaniment, obviously on keyboard. The joke is, the songs sound great with or without the special effects in the game. I love it. If Prince took inspiration for his song Girl 6, I would have thought STHH had something to do with it. ----- *****WHAT IS IT ABOUT SONIC THE HEDGE HOG MUSIC?***** For a video game, the music is so melodic, and yet so funky. I'm guessing I'm not the only one to think so. ----- *****Sonic The Hedge Hog 2***** My fave STHH2 songs: - The Beginning of the "HILL TOP ZONE" especially of STHH2, but the whole thing is great. - MYSTIC CAVE ZONE of STHH2 is awesome too, especially I played everytime in 2player mode. I don't think Prince or anybody would have a problem incorporating this into something funky they have. It's got that New Jack Swing sound to it, like (Will Smith back in the day), or Prince in the 90s when he got caught up in the swing of it. - OIL OCEAN ZONE is the funkiest though. The beginning doesn't let you in on the fact that you'll be dancing until the end of the level. It's even got that Prince kind of brass on it, though I know Prince never had anything to do with STHH (right?). http://www.youtube.com/wa...h8c6I1zH7I - METROPOLIS has the funkiest set of drums right at the beginning. The rest is some techno sounding 80s kiddie's club anthem or something. http://www.youtube.com/wa...RuJfhEeCe8 - INDUSTRIAL ZONE and GREEN HILL and the AQUATIC ZONE are all funky, though the AQUATIC ZONE is more calypso. In fact, they're all funky. I've just been watching youtube video with them all on STHH2. If you haven't played STHH, check out the links. http://video.google.co.uk...l=en&emb=0 ----- *****Sonic The Hedge Hog***** In STHH1 - The pickings are a bit slimmer, but the first one I took notice of was SPRING YARD ZONE, but LABYRINTH was the song I could play again and again. It has a pop feel about it, but the verse part has this groove (though I hated playing that level. I'd always run out of air underwater). STAR LIGHT ZONE My favourite, and I think my uncle would watch everybody play this one just to hear the music. http://www.youtube.com/wa...mqmN6mw4R8 SCARP BRAIN ZONE seriously started something. Forget those orchestral toms and listen to it, when it breaks down, OMG. Prince has taste. It then goes into the melodic chorus without losing the funkiness of it. http://www.youtube.com/wa...oVY7nvcel0 THE LAST STAGE - follow the bassline. I can't believe they made something so good for STHH. I wonder who came up with all that. http://www.youtube.com/wa...nVwm4aQS_E ----- PRINCE SONGS THAT SOUND LIKE THOSE IN STHH GIRL 6 GLAM SLAM's mini part I WISH U HEAVEN *****LOVESEXY ALBUM has STHH sound about it. One song even has the "boulder" special effect from the game. I'm sure of it.***** THE FUTURE VICKY WAITING (like The Future, it has that rolling bass line on the organ) DEAD ON IT [Edited 9/25/08 10:45am] [Edited 9/25/08 10:47am] [Edited 9/25/08 10:48am] [Edited 9/25/08 10:50am]

Yeah, I always loved the music from the Sonic series. It does sound Prince-inspired some of it - that and it had that '80s futuristic Tokyo pop sound too. But I'm pretty sure Sonic wasn't even around in '88. I think the first game came out in 1990/91 or so. So it wouldn't surprise me if what you heard was just a coincidence.
Oh, and for the record, my favorite music level was Labrynth Zone in Sonic 1!! Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

toejam Singingboy You are right. I did some homework on google, and yes, sonic came after Lovesexy. That shocked me a little bit, because the song that Glam Slam has that STHH part in, is actually found in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which was released in 1994. Therefore, Prince inspired the game composers rather than the other way around. The last time I played the original sonic was a year ago on a computer version that someone gave me. MELdOURADOsELVAGEM Youtube sometimes does that. You don't get a sound even though you get a picture. I actually haven't figured the reason behind it.
