On a love song, his voice takes on yearning as he pines for the feel of a lover's lips and the move of her hips. "That's what happens with years of celibacy," says Prince, survivor of two broken marriages. "It all goes into the music." He pauses. I do not believe the celebate business for one min he writes those ballads about someone or some incident. I'm not a religious person, but I do respect his and anyone Else's choice to practice their religion the way they see fit. I can see why he has a problem with YouTube, even though I disagree with him. I doubt I'll buy his book, but I'm definitely anxious to hear a new album or see him on tour. Again, I don't agree with him on Intelligent Design, but I respect his beliefs as I would hope he would respect mine. I've read people take Prince to task for not voting, yet making a song about Martin Luther King. Call me crazy, but I thought Martin fought against discrimation. The same thing you're doing when you're attack his religious beliefs and his decision to be celibate. Whatever Prince chooses to do with his life and his career, I support because it's HIS life, and HIS career!!! I don't think Prince is a bad person just because he doesn't act the way people want him to. I've also read someone say that Prince's music hasn't been the same since 1988. That's because he isn't the same person he was in 1988!!! If you want Prince to act and sound like he did in the 80's then maybe you should watch Purple Rain. Amen to that!! His viewpoint of iTunes is crazy, though. Nothing could make him more money than systematically releasing the contents of the vault through iTunes. All of the music, all of the videos. And it would be far less financially risky than starting an all Prince TV station, which probably wouldn't last longer than 6 months before he pulled the plug. i've heard other bands complain about how pathetic profits are from iTunes. it would make more sense for him to start another musicology store like he had on the NPGMC site - he'd make more money that way. or he could release a new album digitally on his own site as an "exclusive" and then a month or two later, release the album to stores and iTunes. that way, the fans who are keeping on top of his music will be buying directly from him, and those early sales could build a buzz for more casual listeners who depend on target and iTunes for their music shopping. No he wouldn't. NPGMC had to have both way more overhead and a smaller audience than selling material through iTunes. And the difference between Prince selling vault material and typical artists selling stuff on iTunes is Prince has his own record company - there's nobody in the middle taking a percentage, Prince wold get 67% of everything that sold. There is NO WAY NPGMC cleared that kind of revenue. They had expenses of staff, servers, network bandwidth, credit cart processing, custom software, etc, and pretty much did not reach anyone outside of hard core prince fans. Sell 1000 songs from the vault over a 10 year period at .99 each, get paid 67% of that, average 100,000 sales per song and Prince clears over $60 million. That doesn't even count the revenue from selling short and long format videos. Prince's only expense is to pay an engineer to get new content ready each month.

Apple's interest in music stops and starts with the revenue they derive from the iPod. They are no different to the music industry, in their world, they are the music industry.
God bless (yes God) Prince for steering clear. No you don't, iTunes plus music plays anywhere. And NPGMC had a much worse problem, their music only played on Microsoft devices, which nobody has. It's like releasing music on an 8 track tape instead of a CD.

Exactly Itunes is nice but yes the profits are crap. Apple's take is waaaaay more than should be allowed but for up and coming artists its a way of being part of one of the largest and more popular distribution outlets. For Prince though...not really needed. I'm smelling new album here...hope its not another year though. How is 33% way too much? I'm sure their is WAY more markup when a typical CD is sold, not to mention the manufacturing and distribution costs.

Btw, Prince is a pauper compared to Russia's billionaires. He's in the music business, not oil&gas. Goes to show it's all relative. "Reason not the need." King lear estelle81 said: This is a very well-written article and the pictures are outstanding...thanks Serpan. I love me some Prince, but I am far from being blindly obsessed with him. He proves to be a true Gemini with some of the contradictions painted in this article IMO.
I don't believe in religion, any religion; only a higher power that I refer to as 'God'; and, the simple idea that people should love and respect each other and all of God's creations. God is going to be God whether religion exists forever or disappears tomorrow. I don't like when any person, celebrity or not, insists on mentioning their beliefs without taking into consideration if others want to hear it. There's a fine line between sharing your beliefs and forcing them on people (Tom Cruise and Madonna crossed these lines not to long ago, and Prince ain't far behind them IMO). I don't like when he asks people if they believe in God, because God has different titles throughout the world and he should consider that before posing that question to his diverse group of fans out of respect for those who don't refer to their deity by that moniker. Honestly, the only thing that religious indidivuals came up with that made any real sense to me was WWJD...What Would Jesus Do? Really, what would Jesus Do? I don't think many of them thought about it before they started printing it on bumper stickers, T-Shirts, and other merchandise. I don't think Jesus would be rollin' around in a over-priced car, wearin' a head-to-toe designer ensemble, and charging people to listen to him speak the Word (then he would be a televangelist ). Nor, do I think that Jesus would be living alone in a 9-bedroom, 30,000 square foot mansion....but I could be wrong. If people are going to throw out religion and make it seem like because they go to church twice a week, once on Saturday, and 3 times on Sunday, that means that they get an automatic entry pass into heaven, than they need to really think about that acronym...WWJD. Practice what you preach is all I'm sayin. I don't expect Prince to give up all his fame and fortune and live like Mother Theresa, but I don't want him preaching to me if he's not going to live a little more of a humble existence either. Why the hell do you need a 9-bedroom house all to yourself? I'm just sayin'. Other points of interest for me: "His mystery is not something he works at. It's who he is."
No that's called 'secrecy', even mysterious people are more open than Prince at some point in their lives and careers. To see that he's kept something that his father gave him as a child is soo sweet to me. Seriously, this is the most real and open part of the interview IMHO. He's still a daddy's boy after all these years. On a love song, his voice takes on yearning as he pines for the feel of a lover's lips and the move of her hips. "That's what happens with years of celibacy," says Prince, survivor of two broken marriages. "It all goes into the music." He pauses. "This time, it has to be the right person."
First, he has to be willing to compromise if he wants to find true love. I love Prince, but Prince seems to not be the type to change his practices for any female. He loves his music and he's a workaholic when it comes to his craft. He can't expect a real woman to give up everything she believes in and follow his practices and he's not willing to do the same. I don't believe real love works like that, but that's just my

However, your post is so vitriolic that it makes me wonder why you would spend time reading an interview and posting comments about a "sorry sack of shit," as you described him. You really need to get a life. The idea of "not voting" is dangerous and counter-intuitive to the ideas of MLK and the activism of the Civil Rights Movement. It's especially sickening to hear a rich, pampered African-American espouse the views of non-participation in the political process at a time when we are on the verge of possibly electing the 1st Black president. How can he comment on the injustices of corporate America and multi-nationals when he discourages the only process available for average people to make changes in those institutions. Just because his views are religious/cult based does not make them anymore credible. The bible also has been used to promote racism, sexism, homophobia, war mongering, etc. And intelligent design - give me a break. Instead of studying the same book over and over again, P should investigate some leading scientists. It's time for him to go back to his Beverly Hills mansion, secluded from people who have been affected by the realities of life, and make some good music. He's got too much time on his hands.

he loves this interviewer, and she clearly loves him too.
The good: prince seems very open less guarded I want prince's turntable! The video channel seems very cool The bad: I'm so sick of this religious stuff. I wish I could separate the music and the persona from his personal life which is his own business and his own right, but I just can't. And I know that on one hand Im glad he seems more open but then ding him when he talks about JW. I guess he can't win. Maybe I wish he would just open up more about music and less about religion. Tell us about what was going thru your head when u were making graffiti bridge, tell us what your favorite tour was, describe how u felt in LA when the crowd went nuts during the acoustic section, blah blah. I doubt 'the divine' is as good as he thinks. I remember similar bragging about 'sex in the summer' One last comment: It would be great if the video channel could show us truly new stuff. Like behind the scenes of the recording of the classics if footage exists, break down the tracks of the classics and show us how u played them and how they all come together, let us hear things like WDC with baseline and without or play us 1999 with all the harmonies together instead of isolated. Show us rehearsal footage, do an unplugged set, show us some of famous aftershows. Don't make this about JW, make it about the music and think about the fans. Question: If he launches a video channel, will he censor the old stuff? If so count me out

Well... here I go.
I received the article in USA today by a strange coincidence. A particular person whom I have been trying to get closer to the father upstairs for about 12 years now brought this article to me yesterday. He said that it was in the lobby of a hotel smack dab in the middle of a table on top of other pieces of the paper. Oddly, never anything is ever on that table... strange. However, in the first place I don't like newspapers, the feel of them, smell of them and the residue that remains forever embedded in my lines of life called the fingerprints...just nasty stuff. My point; however, IS, the fact that Mr. Prince Rogers Nelson has come from trying to figure out what life is about and how he was given so much in music constantly running around and within him. All the while, knowing that there was something greater than him as a human being with love. The finite point being he has completely found the truth. The only thing people in life that is true is LOVE and that LOVE created by the the father and shared with the SON. GOD and Jesus Christ. I first came to the internet "black hole, as it was truly noted" at love4oneanother. What really got me was the fact that I was looking for others in truth and found some very very wonderful people. Upon going to the holy river chat I found more wonderful people. Throughout the years many thought I was crazy, a nut ball, or just chatised me to do it without really knowing me... all the while, I never gave up on telling the truth GOD is truly love and you are created with love and nothing outside of love lives forever. For many years I went to the chats to find people, who had the same love of everything (everything being created by GOD in it's full beauty and free will in choice). It wasn't that I was acting with ego or a better than you attitude - simply put, I did it because I truly care for people and that everlasting life is real. Last evening around 12am reading the article made me feel at peace knowing that a man (A MAN of GOD) has arrived in the place of peace we ALL SHOULD KNOW. Nobody on the earth is meant to be alone and/or feel alone, nobody. There is going to come to pass an event so HUGE and SO incredible that everybody truly will KNOW. GOD isn't about unlove, GOD is LOVE. Whether, you know why I am here or not my free will is to share the truth. A man in 1998 I spoke with introduced me to the book of knowledge that leads to everlasting life... I searched for years and years and YEARS and once coming upon it and truly noting PROVERBS and REVELATION... there is going to be a new world, a new earth and it will be everlasting. There will be many, who will break down his words in what he has said. That won't harm him, if such is done... once you reach a point of truth and it is instilled in you deep, nothing can touch you. You are protected and you are loved with a fountain a deep river of energy. Some may say they know what he is doing or that what he said is lies - well, only if you are living with him do you know what he does, if he lets you know. Remember, it's his life and truly he can do what he wants. The only judgement anybody should be concerned now - as eternity IS AT HAND, is the fact of GOD's judgement and your recognition towards him. I am closing this open moment with this... Mr. Prince Rogers Nelson I admire (as the table has turned and was once said to me) - I have much admiration for you, as well. With this being said, no matter where when or how... in heaven eternal and everlasting life - we all will be equal in love and the system of things will never stop an everlasting love in friendship - see you in the new world! I will be the one feeding the animals... Thank you. QuietSeven PS: Urs, Mark, Char, P & Brandon - I miss all of you and love you.
