Crimson and Clover

Is "Crimson and Clover" a cover of the Jimmy Eat World song?

I highly doubt it, but you never know with Prince...

No, it's a Tommy James and the Shondells song from the '60s. Joan Jett had a hit with it too in the early '80s.

Okay, the Jimmy Eat World song goes "Crimmmmsonnn and Clovvverrr,,,, over and oooover"

But so does the Tommy James song. But they are two different songs.

And then there is the Jarvis Cocker song "Black Magic" that sound EXACTLY like the Tommy James, but with different lyrics.

Sorry if this is getting off the topic of Prince, but the point was to determine which version Prince is covering.

Also, what the hell does "Crimson and Clover" mean and what's the big deal about crimsons and/or clovers?

I Believe "Crimson&Clover," is a grove U see with your heart...
It has the Spirit of Christmas in April. It is the wine of love that has ripened.
It is Red and Green And fresh from the Vine of Divine. It is Blood born. It is Eternal. T

Once upon a time there were lyrics that made absolutely no sense....vaguely maybe because of coming out the hippie-acid movement. Most of the songs I grew up with never made any sense.... blinded by the light....now there's a good challenge to decipher...Elton John songs were very typical of not making any sense what so ever...but still eliciting a sincere feeling behind it....
Bennie and the Jet's??? I could go on for days....Crimson and Clover is one of them and it just gives you something to interpret in your own way in a personal way...The music is more about the listener than the song itself....It's not the performer singing his/hers feeling to the world....Just a different way of writing.....

Funny, but I don't think P could really pull this song off. The major appeal of both prior versions (in my mind) is that it's raw, flat vocal style really makes it sound sincere. I think Prince's vocal affectations might glitz it up too much.

Maybe if he'd tried it in the 80s...
