Prince overrated?

This is a fan site so it might sound silly to ask this question here, but there are a lot of different kinds of fans here so....

I recently read an article saying Prince is terribly overrated and apart from a few great albums he hasn't done anything listenable.

A very provocative statement to me, but music is subjective so okay.
Is there anyone here who would agree, who thinks that Prince IS overrated?

I've said this before and i'll say it again, yes! and No!

Every act on the planet is over and underrated at all times.

Music is totally subjective.

LMAO @ that sentence.

That kind of says it all.

Overrated/underrated who really cares! Between 80-88 Prince gave us great art and great art usually divides opinion.

Where's the article from? He's been living off the past for a few years now, so this may a recent addition to the 'knock-Prince' catalog...

Ah hell no!!

How can anyone suggest such a thing? If Prince ought to sue anybody, it should be someone who doesn't know how awesome he is falloff

I mean, c'mon. He might not be big on a global scale the way he was in the 80's, but I dare any of the big musical acts of today to do what he can do.

None of them can play over 20 instruments. Few of them, if any at all, write, compose, perform AND produce their music the way he does.

Those that think he's overrated obviously don't realize he's still a force to be wreakened with (tours like Musicology and 21 Nights are proof of that) and others probably think of him as "the freak of the week" that he was to them in the 80's.

I came in2 his music just last year and got a whole bunch of it to see what he was about.
Sure, he might not be perfect, but I'm more satisfied with all the stuff I bought. As old as Dirty Mind (I WILL change that soon enough wink ) to as new as Planet Earth, and at both ends of the spectrum, I found music like none I'd heard before.

But then again... no artist of mine had written such a great percentage of their own work before (opposed to 30% of it which is co-written).
had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

Are you kidding me, if anything, Prince is underrated. He doesn't get enough props with the guitar and even with the piano work that he's done throughout the years. I laugh in the face of any idiot who will sit there and tell me he's overrated.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

yes i do wish he would get more props 4 his guitar work
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

The problem is the music industry. They are the ones feeding people garbage music. This is why I DO NOT listen to mainstream artists or the radio.

They drill in your head the songs you never liked but you're forced to listen to and enjoy. Pssshhh...

Prince to me has separated himself from mainstream, and is still able to have a huge fan base.

He's is not overrated. He is just someone who the normal person recognizes as a very talented individual who knows music. The difference between Prince and the whack "artists" or today is that he doesn't just give us entertainment, he gives us the whole package straight from his heart. He is the best artist/performer, though confusing at times, that I know.

"Overrated" rubbish!

I have to also add that Prince is his own image. The artists of today allow the record companies and to mold them. Do you see how much Prince changed his image over the years and kept givin' us the hits. Yah, Billboard and whomever else may not think many of his albums were not number one just cuz it didn't fit into the mold of whatever style was cool at the time. But who cares. Good music is good music if it's....should I say it???....MUSIC!!!

I'm sooo tired of hearing the same garbage on the radio. Seeing the same stuff just in a different package on tv. Prince continues to reinvent himself and could care less what anyone thinks.

I don't even listen to much secular music but the same goes for the gospel music too. I HATE mainstream radio and what they make people listen to. I listen to artists most people prob have never heard of. The radio, mainstream, media of today...it's garbage.

He is definately NOT overated. Not at all. You don't see his pictures on kids school packpacks and pencil cases (unless they put it there lol). Being overated means you don't have the charisma or the talent to back up your popularity, and your image is mostly a show. Prince is extrememly talented and deserves more credit than he gets.

Whell,we have all that crap such as Pussycatdolls and Brytney Spears and the hole hip hop shit and we have PRINCE!he is truly a great musician and performer, and a beutiful singer,i just love his voice.Moust of the artists if you can call them artist are perfoming whit lypsinks at their concerts, even Madonna does it,but Prince gives you the true expirience, real live performance kiking ass whit the guitar and a walking by the clounds piano.so he deservs all the great things people say about him,and i dont give a shit to reporters that dont understand how great he is,moust of them arent musicians ( i am),they dont have a clue about music harmony, they dont understand a simple chord progression,so why should i pay atention to what they say?
Prince is great, one of the best of all times,a true artist in a fake music world.

I dont think Prince is overated.
Im an longtime fan since 83/84, even though I dont consider every single Prince album great and their is the occasional stuff that makes me cringe a bit yet still I wouldnt say Prince is overatted. When you consider the amount of work and passion Prince puts into what he does and if their is any doubt you only have to see the man play live to recognise how truly truly great muscician, performer and entertainer he is. No Prince may not always do an album or a song that Im crazy about but the man is definitly not overrated in the music world he has paid his dues and definititly the respect and recognition he gets is warranted.

He is criminally underrated amongst the general public. Countless people still only recognize him as a strange pop star. They don't give him nearly enough credit for being an innovative multi-instrumentalist and genre-blending, boundary-crossing composer and producer.

Amongst most people on this site, ironically, he's vastly overrated. A lot of people here can't even admit, for example, that there are superior guitarists.
