Many music related things choose to slight Prince by not including the man in "the best of" type of things. They do it all the time. Rolling Stone magazine is one of the few that gives it up to Prince. During 84-86, Prince owned MTV. They couldn't show Prince enough. Madonna has never received that type of hype from MTV in her entire career that P received in 84-86 and MJ in 82-83. And they showed Prince in heavy rotation in 83 as well. For MTV to purposely overlook Prince doesn't hurt Prince...It just makes MTV look bad. Because trust me, many people who saw this on MTV, wondered the same thing: Where's Prince? And these people may not even be fans of the man. But Prince was/is TOO big for MTV to NOT have included him. And on MTV, where he dominated their airwaves with his videos and his news and his image. They can't justify not picking him when they picked MJ and Madonna. He was TOO popular on their network and they know it. The most obvious video choice from Prince regarding MTV is Little Red Corvette or When Doves Cry. Either one of them, (which MTV played to death) should have been included. No question.

no, i really can't. almost all of his videos are cheap-looking, amateurish, and recorded on the same soundstage with an 8mm camera.

and the ones that aren't are boring as hell.

Yeah, Prince may be an MTV era artist who got played a lot back in the day, but he has very few actual great videos. All the best ones for me also aren't his best remembered and most iconic hits. Maybe Gett Off fits in both criteria.

I have to agree, as far as the videos themselves, that was never one of his strong points.

Well we know better don't we?! F MTV, they're probably mad at him for one reason or another. But Prince has been around longer than they have, he don't need them. biggrin

I honestly think Prince's music were always soooo much better than the videos.
I mean, most of his early videos are performance videos, later stuff, like Kiss just looks cheap and cheeky nowadays. And if you're honest you can't compare these with classic videos like Like A Prayer or Thriller etc.

i agree with u..i actually don't think any of his vids were exceptional when compared 2 some others about at the time.
i'm really surprised his were never more glamourous...but loved kiss & raspberry beret are classics! iconic stuff 4 sure!
that said, prince never did things by halves & gave us the ultimate vids..

perhaps mtv needs another category, 'ultimate vids'

Well I'm honest and I can compare When Doves Cry to Like A Prayer. Thriller is in a class all by itself so it fucks up everybody else.

ya i agree 2. in my oppinion he always had plenty going for him that Maddonna and MJ didnt (a blockbuster film for one) but videos werent one of them. Doves and Beret are iconic in their own right but they werent revelations in the art like others were.

"Ray Of Light"?! That's hardly one of Madonna's best videos! They should have chosen "Like A Prayer" which is one of the most amazing videos ever, imo. And let's not forget "Express Yourself","Material Girl","Vogue","Bad Girl"....and numerous others.Madonna has done so many outstanding videos.

I agree. Most of Prince's videos weren't really that exceptional. His best videos are "When Doves Cry","Raspberry Beret" and "Batdance".Most of his other videos aren't very extravagant or interesting.I don't think he really cared about videos for the most part. Some of his singles don't even have videos ("If I Was Your Girlfriend","Delirious") and in some cases,he just threw together a video without him even appearing in it ("Sign O The Times").I'm guessing that he wanted to save everything for his movies, which is why the videos were simple and inexpensive ("Kiss" and "Alphabet St." for example).

i think princes best video is actually 'Kiss'

also on the madonna front.. ray of light was an average video, that technology had been used before.. like a prayer was excellent tho.

This is why I was so excited when I first saw the "Batdance" video. That video is something that you would expect from Michael Jackson or Madonna. It's lavish,well-choregraphed and directed, and it obviously had a huge budget.

I can't think of any Prince videos that are actually "great".
They all look cheap--and not in the 'indie' cheap kind of way.
I love a few of them (Kiss, Raspberry Berret, Get Off), but I love them as a fan--not because they're any good.

As far as the list, did The Prodigy's "Smack my Bitch Up" make the list? That video is awesome. lol

I'm guessing you are under 25?

My point is....the "1999" video is awesome. So is "When Doves Cry."
I personally think those videos are way better than any of the expensive crappy videos that get made today. Prince made plenty of dope ass videos just performing on a stage with his band (just look at the 4 videos he made for the 1999 album just performing onstage...1999/Little Red Corvette/Automatic/Let's Pretend We're Married)...that's what happens when you got talent, you don't need some fancy schmansy million dollar video with a story line and a million camera cuts, all you need is one or two cameras and a stage and you perform your ass off.
