I honestly love this song. It's his most radio friendly song in years. I was happy he won the Grammy for this one... We need more new Prince music. |

I think it's a creepy, insulting song. Saying your ex-wife, who famously gave birth to a child with severe and fatal birth defects, didn't have "what it takes" is just wrong.

Maybe this is a silly question but Bend in the wind? What does that mean??? [Edited 9/10/08 18:15pm] It's like willing to meet someone "half way". Can you bend a little, without breaking? Like a branch. Bend, but don't break. Give of yourself just enough, without breaking yourself. |

I honestly feel this is the most beautiful love song Prince has written in years. The melody the background vocals and that linndrum machine. Which I'm glad he is bringing back that sound. No one does a song with that machine better than Prince. I heard he is bringing it back. I don't care what anybody says that song was the best on Planet Earth.I am so happy he won a Grammy for that song.....I LOVE IT! will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

wow, never thought of it that way. if that was his intention, yuck. It's a pretty song otherwise, but the connotation is there for me and bugs me. And you know, if nothing else, there's something kinda...I don't know...desperate?...about a 50-year-old guy crowing about trying to find a "baby mama." Like it's the greatest honor he can bestow upon her, and all the other women in his life couldn't "keep [their] man" so he kicked them to the curb. And the whole thing about how every good woman wants her girlfriends to hate her because they can't steal her man is wrong and gross. But yeah, other than all those things, I really like the song.

That line, when I first heard it, I was nearly a puddle. So sweet. This song actually took me a while to like all the way thru cuz I didn't know what a "baby mama" was and I couldnt really make out the lyrics which was actually that part "bend in the wind but dont break" up to where he says "show me one of them and I'll make her mine"... had difficulty riddling that out. But it's the perfect intro to my favorite section of this album which ends with the song "All the Midnights" My favorite part is still the spoken segment, especially where he says the word "London"... I had a dream once where he asked me if I was going to see him in London, saying it exactly the same way had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

I think you're over-analyzing it. It's a superficial love song about how he loves this woman so much that he can't envision anyone but her being worthy of becoming the mother of his child. It's a very egotistical song, though, since it presumes that he's doing a woman a favour by choosing her to become a mother. It's as if he's implying that he's bestowing a great honour by selecting her to receive his seed. That's truly charmless. I think the song sucks. It has a very good and organic sounding beat, but the lyrics are the same old tale of modern Prince not knowing how to sound clever or thought provoking without stating the obvious. [Edited 9/10/08 19:50pm] The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

i think it's a great track. i didnt realize he won a grammy for it either.
but did you ever notice that he kinda ripped off the melody of "Tomorrow" from the musical "Annie?" you can sing "bet your bottom dollar that tomorrooooow" in place of "could it be that i was looking for uuuuu."

Maybe this is a silly question but Bend in the wind? What does that mean??? [Edited 9/10/08 18:15pm] Okay, I'm guessing but 'Bend in the wind' might mean that Prince wants someone to be there for him. Regardless of what it looks like on the surface or to the public, he might actually want a different 'someone.' But since WE demand that he is into the youngest and someone pretty, someone who really loves him has to understand and 'bend with the wind.' He might want us to realize that it's society and the media that want him there. Prince might not want to be 'there' along with the insecurities and false values of a young pretty one, but it is his celebrity, fame and fans that demand it. Can anyone imagine our Prince wanting just to be loved without all the fan fare and expectations? So to me anyway, 'bend with the wind' means let Prince give em what they want (or what they think they want) and be content to sit in the background finding ways to make him smile.

[Edited 9/10/08 19:50pm] I might be overanalyzing it, but I don't think so. The lyrics on PE are trying to be deep all around; I think this album made a personal statement from him in many ways. Or at least it was really trying to do so. And the song is a little too personal ("I've heard it said all my lovers look alike") and specific to be just superficial, imo. But otherwise I pretty much agree with your other points. It definitely seems like an egotistical song to me.

It's rather difficult to explain without sounding like yet the lyrics in Future Baby Mama flows like no other piece on Planet Earth. EVERY song with a message just FITS a certain something something with feeling and a bonus... music at its heart and emotions as the pulse. Prince seems to be such a heavy romantic in his music. Ok lemme shhhoosh and play it again.

To Bend in the wind =
Through Thick or Thin, to be able to notice what is truth and to work through the lies of life that may come upon you in all seven temptations in life. To be able to forgive yourself as well as, the other in all situations through sickness, health, rich in deeds and strength in poorness, to be able to with stand lifes trials and tribulations together and succeed with GOD through it all. That is what bend in the wind is. As I was laying in bed reading a book instantly - this came to mind to add "to bend in the wind" also means - to be able to notice when somebody has gone through something and listen to the wisdom of another to share in that wisdom, so as not to go have to go through it again. Therefore, if another knows what they are talking about then the other should listen and not walk thru the fire empty handed. When your mother says, don't touch that stove - it is because she knows...same in a relationship, if another knows what can happen, if you don't listen, then it becomes a broken branch rather then a willow tree to bend in the wind. Take care, Quiet Seven [Edited 9/11/08 18:17pm]

I Like this song and the whole Planet Earth CD.
My interpretation of "bend with the wind" is that Prince is instructing the future woman that she has to be understanding of the various demands of his job and status; and that she shouldn't "break" or let it get to her. He praises her by listing the attributes she possesses. He tells her that she will be "the one" he wants to be with and notes that his previous women couldn't handle the pressure of being with him. It's his assessment of the situation. It's not necessarily a put down of them; most likely a sad realization.
