Not going to pick songs here (I did that before allready), and 16 is a bit much maybe (12 would make a stronger album in my opinion).

But, it doesnt take away my feeling that if Prince had decided to 'keep' the best songs from these 3 albums for one single album, it would probably have 'created' his best album since the Gold Experience (No, before people start to complain, The Rainbow Children just ISN'T that good).

One of my main complaints about Princes output since he left WB is that is sometimes too much (two 3-CD sets), too obscure (The Rainbow Children, News) or just too uninspired (New Power Soul, Rave, quite a lot of the songs on his last three albums).

Maybe Prince was thinking otherwise himself, but like all other 'big' artists with long careers it 'just is the case' that those artist, including Prince, have a certain peek period, where they can deliver a great album or classic about every year, and that after that they have to 'collect' their better songs for an album-release about every 3 - 4 years.

Looking back at Princes career from 1995 until now, maybe a strong, convincing manager (like Alan Leeds was) could have prevented Prince from getting lost into such a 'meandering career'.

For example:
- The 3 CD-set Emancipation stripped down to one single CD: a very good one!
- Releasing 'The Truth' as an official single CD: might have made an impact, especially because it sounds so un-Princelike for the general listeners.
- Combining the best songs from Chaos and Disorder with those from The Vault: a very enjoyable jazzy / bluesy album with a live-feel.
- As i said before: Prince maybe should have wait for 2007 to release an album combining the best songs on Musicology, 3121 and Planet Earth.

10. Te Amo Corazon (3121)
11. Black Sweat (3121)
12. Get On The Boat (3121)
13. Musicology (Musicology)
14. Planet Earth (Planet Earth)
15. Lion of Judah (Planet Earth)

I think it was a virtual b-side download to one of the Musicology singles. There were two others: "Silver Tongue" and "United States of Division."

[Edited 9/20/08 8:10am]

Which is why I oppose the "less is more" theory. Looking at this thread I see that everyone has different ideas about what songs would make for a strong single album. My "perfect" album would deny some fans their favorite songs, and vice versa. For me, the "quality" of some of the album lists in this thread just proves to me that less would in fact be less, in quality as well as quantity (and I'm sure many fans feel that way when looking at my favs).

I responded to this thread more as a declaration of my favorite tunes from the last three albums, rather than a petition for less music. But, from certain posts in this thread as well as many posts in other threads, I take it that some fans would REALLY like Prince to limit the quantity of his output. I would much rather he increase it, then I can pick my favorite tunes and make my own playlists, and hopefully there will be more tunes which catch my ear. It's one thing to "imagine" a perfect album and quite another to "lobby" for less music.

wink

Thanks I understand, cool I was just curious 2 see how people opinions differ on what songs theyd pick for the "Imaginary Album" The songs i picked 4 mine are most probably not liked by much cuz there the more commercial sounding and not that daring. So its intresting 2 see what older fans etc would pick in contrast 2 mine

well, i think there's a difference when you're talking about projects that are specifically meant to be double-discs. though double albums have some stuff that could go as well, even if it isn't enough to cut it down to 45 minutes.

awww, dont take any of what we say too serious, i kid with L4OATheOriginal because he such a hardcore 90's fan, but i think hes one of the coolest cats here too, just so you know

ps your mum has good taste in Prince music too it seems wink

damn just when i wanted 2 have a bitchfight u go and say something cool like that touched DAMN U!!! ;grin:

but just 4 the record, it's not that i'm such a hardcore 90's fan, i am a hardcore fan 4 every era with the xception of 2007 big grin
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

After much experimentation, I have found this to be the perfect track-list:

3121
Chelsea Rodgers
Black Sweat
Guitar
Musicology
Satisfied
Te Amo Corazón
Reflection
Lion Of Judah
Planet Earth

Just the right length - good and funky up-front, nice and reflective on side 2, and killer finale with superb guitar-work to round it out.
