Graffiti Bridge - the worst Prince song ever?

I guess this has been said a million times before, but I'm bored waiting for some new releases - 21 nights at the end of the month biggrin

Anyway, I was in the car and put on Graffiti Bridge, listening to that album, there's some solid stuff on there. But when it came to the title track, I couldn't believe how bad it was. It sounded as if some school children made the song up for the end of term play and were singing it too! I can't believe that anyone would say this is Prince's best song, but is it even a good Prince song?

I know I'm gonna get flamed, if anyone can be bothered, but if Prince wants to bring out some new music, I'll stop posting wink

BTW, the rap in "The Latest Fashion" is hysterical and Tevin Campbell's rap on "Round and Round" is just too lame to behold.

I actually think it's pretty catchy. It sounds like a finale to a broadway musical or something. I like the breakdown at the end where everyone is clapping and the piano kicks in. And when Tevin sings "There's a future worth fighting for, I'm a living witness." Not bad at all!

See, I hate Arms of Orion and was always iffy about Do U Lie? (can't say I HATE anything off Parade, tho...), but I don't loathe GB. I thought it was a weak, throwaway track but kinda fun.
OTOH after seeing the "movie" the whole album became difficult to listen to (liked it a lot before) and the title track declined still further.

I think the reason it gets so much hate is because of the contrast to PR (also not the strongest of his songs, IMHO) - GB is so pussy compared to PR, it kind of epitomises why the film was so embarrassing...

Thanks, I can't believe anyone replied! I still can't stand that song, but it brings a smile to my face because it's just so bad.

I've really been delving into the Prince catalogue... today, I have mostly been listening to the Symbol album... it's obvious what's bad on that album, but what's good is Morning Papers - I loved that song when I first got the album, but man, it's still gold - Like eating cornflakes and milk after years without!

Arms of Orion is the worst track all categories. Sucks big time. Too bad the B-side was so good (compare a horrible standard ballad with a good Princey one). AOO is just plain embarassing.

GB isn't my fav PRN song but he has a lot of songs I don't like.

He tried so hard with GB ( both the movie and the song) so I find that out of character for him. The sappiness of the story/song I find sexy, because it's Prince.
I saw Prince cry
and I asked God why

The answer He gave
caused me 2 b saved

Now I cannot tell a lie

I've always maintained that it sounded like a Gum Commercial. I remember these commercials from when I was a really little kid where a woman would be running through a field in a white dress whilst holding a GIGANTIC package of Wrigley's.. I can just see the commercial in my mind with the soundtrack playing:

Everybody's looking 4 Wrigley's Spearamint Gum!
a reason 2 believe in...Everybody's looking 4 love

Imago

Prince has written quite a few songs that make me absolutely cringe. But it says more about me I'm sure than it does about him. Cause a lot of folks love the songs I hate.

For example, I really don't care for "Lets have a baby" off of Emancipation, but some folks love it.

Yeah,it sounds like the finale of a Broadway musical. When I first heard it,I envisioned Prince,Morris,Tevin,Mavis and the rest of the cast sitting on the graffiti bridge, holding hands, hugging, smiling and singing this song at the end of the movie.

lol

Its indeed corny and kitschy like hell (especially the lyrics), but I love it biggrin

In terms of a broadway musical song its very catchy, and next to that, in the background you can hear some of the greatest, raw guitar work by Prince.

I kinda did too! Remember all the thoughts you had trying to piece the movie together in your mind the two months before the movie came out? The movie was nothing like I imagined it would be...
