BP,

Savvy is right you cant post orgnotes like that says in the forum rules(it is the last rule in the rule section):

Respect others' privacy and belongings.
Don't post orgNotes, e-mails or other private correspondence in public forums. Don't make private information about other users, public. Don't take avatar or other graphics and use them as your own, or as the basis for your own, without permission.

I got in trouble for this as well once not a good thing to do.

*walks out of the thread*

Back on topic: I still say everyone has their own opinion about what "funk" actually is.

Awwwww! bawl Don't go!!!!!

Man, ya'll REALLY do not like me!

Look, someone sent me insults in an org-note. I posted both sides of the brief exchange word for word. So how is someone calling me "faggot" and a "bitch" their "privacy"??? Wouldn't that be my "privacy"? However, if you want to run and get a mod and have them snip that for me, i'll coughapologizecough for it. How's that.

but then again, i'll give u the benefit of the doubt by once again asking (don't know if this is the 3rd or 25th time someone has asked u this)..DEFINE FUNK IN YOUR ESTIMATIONS

Um, i sat there with the catalog and that's what i came up with.
And for the LAST TIME, I DID THAT ALREADY.

imo ur estimations have been blurred and changed throughout this thread but i will happly re read ur thoughts if u can shine the light 2 where it's at. if not can u please restate ur definition? thank u

is this about the definition of funk.. I think he was using the allmusic def. I'm still not clear though either (but then, I think I would have a similar problem reading a definition of jazz- doesn't mean I don't know it when hear it. I can also differentiate between jazz which blends with other styles and something like wayne hancock who plays country swing; why is he country and not jazz? I don't know, he just is!)

... i think that is where the examples and analogies have helped (I love me some analogies)...

obviously there is still some disagreement on it though. i think this comes back to a question about how something is classified (which in biology allows for communication possible between nations.. its a beautiful thing when you think about it)

I would throw this question over to murph if you want a written definition of funk. I think he was in agreement with BP on this particular issue (well closer anyway- Prince is not a 'funk' artist).

murph writes about music (right?) and P plays and spins music. It really pretty logical, that BP is using examples rather than giving a written description.

so.... murph (don't think this is some sort of challenge- this is for the greater good lol)

would you expand/extend the definition of funk in allmusic?

also, what prince tracks would you say go beyond being funky and actually could be called 'funk' (or have you done this already)

BP will probably disagree, and I'm sure you will cope, but I hope the rest of you don't let yourselves be too hurt by this

Does anybody remember:

P on the cover of Musician magazine in 1981-2?

P selling out arenas in 1982-3 to predominately black audiences? What other black act was doing this at this magnitude during this timeframe besides Rick James?

P releasing a double album that is ranked as on the 100 greatest in 1982?

P on the cover of Rolling Stone in 1983?

i don't think anyone has forgotten.. the thing is with Rick james being so huge (so much bigger than prince in 1980-82, right?), how can you know who had the larger influence.

i suspect that they both had an impact on the funk scene...

even if they had been underground, they still could have had an influence..

i'm sure that the music scene has changed alot, but surely musicians back then still had a knowledge of the underground music scene..

do you hear a prince influence in the early 1980's funk acts people have mentioned?

So true! And by 1987, P had already built up his funk resume and influenced many. How many other people out there went to high school from 1980-83 and remember the cultural and artistic influence of P in the Black community? Some posters seem to think that P dropped on the planet out of nowhere to unleash Purple Rain. By the time PR came out, P was already a household name among anybody who cares about black music.

Does anybody remember seeing the 1981 Sexuality and Controversy videos on the old show Video Jukebox?

Isn't it a little hypocritical to say that all the artists who made careers or jumpstarted fading careers (Cameo, BarKays) from putting out purple funk were catering to commercial interests or record company trend watching and not "influenced" - while at the same time propping up all pre-1984 funk as "organically" produced?

As always you're holding it down, Robin!
There have been at least 3 "definitions" of funk provided on this thread already, and i thought the one provided on i think page 6 was the one i was rolling with (we might need a freaking table of contents for this thread soon).

And yes, last page i actually listed all of the songs that i thought could be called "funk". "We Can Funk" & "Hide The Bone". And "My Drawers" from The Time. I wrestled over adding "The Exodus Has Begun" but decided against adding it.

And for the millionth time that's not to say that there aren't a TON of Prince songs that i think are "funky". That list would take me WAY too long to write. But songs that i think are "funk", those are it.

Again, I think Prince created his own sound by melding quite a few different genres together. But i certainly wouldn't call it an offshoot of "funk".

Oh, good lord. You come in here quoting Prince as proof that he's "funk".

And even worse you can't even read. Nowhere did i say RFTW was "funk". We were having a grown folks conversation about the influence of Prince on r&b AND funk in 80-82.

Don't jump in that weak, if you're not going to bother to actually read what's being said.

This is some nonsense; Prince was the face of modern FUNK, ….. The Time "get it up"

What BP is talking about is old fashioned, "when I was a kid, a loaf of bread cost 5 cents" bullshit, lol,
NEVER take any guy that mentions "Ready For The World" and funk in the same sentence seriously. Seriously!

lol

Why is it that ya'll KAK's keep confusing Prince's influence on music with his popularity? That's not even the point!

HOWEVER, the point that was being discussed was Prince's influence SPECIFICALLY from 80-82. Sure Prince was getting love in the black community, in some communities more than other, but he wasn't a national phenomenon by ANY stretch of the imagination until 1983.

And again, Murph's point was Prince "introduced synths/drum machines" to the funk.

MY point was it was happening already as a result of the popularity of "new wave".

Thus i don't think Rick or Prince had that influence. It was already happening.

Wow...did i say Prince introduced synths and drum machines to funk?....

That's something I never said....

(for the 100th time...lol) What I said was his mix of the two (having the tracks being virtually all syths and drum machines--i.e. stripped down, as well as synths playing the role of horns, a staple of the funk) was something entirely new...As well as new wave being injected into R&B (not Talking Heads or other white new wave acts...)...That mix basically became what became known as the Minneopolis Sound in 1982 (of course, everyone on here knows that...)

I think I can speak for myself homie...
