I believe that the originator of this thread is just trying to get a rise out of us. We all know that Purple Rain is a classic album.

Hmmmmm,
I think I sort of agree with you on this. Back in the day I did wear out the grooves on my vinyl PR record. Retaped the record sleeve multiple times, etc. I did purchase the CD of it years ago and .....I find I rarely ever listen to it now. 1984-1887, it was almost a non-stop listen but now, except for The Beautiful ones, i rarely listen to it. SOTT, , Gold, Controversy, & 1999 I play the most. Then Batman, Planet Earth, D&P, Black, Lovesexy, and assorted B-sides/ other artists, etc.

I can understand people saying that this CD is overrated but I personally don't think it is overrated at all. It's a timeless, classic album that will stand the test of time for generations to come. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Give me 1999, Around the World in a Day, Sign o the Times or Prince anyday over that! What? Aside from the singles you grew up on? There were 9 songs of which 6 were singles. I admit I hardly ever listen to this cd anymore, in fact I have a ton of P songs on my ipod and there are none from this album, but....everytime I go back and listen....I realize why this album is so widely heralded. Personally, Lovesexy and TRC are ranked higher to me....but PR is still the shit and is not overrated. I was like 3 and knew the few songs I mentioned. And there's no need for anyone to say I'm an idiot. I think the sounds on there were well done and original, but not my cup of tea, I prefer 1999 wayyy more.

The Purple Rain era was amazing.
Michael Jackson can be faulted for many weird personal excesses, but his contribution to the excitement stirring in the music industry can't be refuted. Lagging record sales pre-Thriller totally picked up afterwords. Folks were excited about music again. The buzz unfortunately also came with a great deal of glam. It wasn't so much about talent back then as it was about whether or not you had a gimmick--the flashier the better. This was the environment Prince exploded onto the music scene with. He was just as raunchy (and more) than Madonna, just as much a showman as MJ, just as much a perfectionist as Springsteen, and so much more. The unique thing about this period is that Prince was doing and trying things that nobody else...at least no big name musicians had tried--fuzing jazz, dance, funk, rock, classical and anything else in between into his music. There was NOTHING out there at the time that sounded like ATWIAD, Parade, SOTT and LoveSexy. When you bought a Prince album, you simply couldn't confuse it with anything else. He was amazing. With each record, he seemed to reinvent himself musically. With each record came a new look, anad new buzz, and tons of b-sides and maxi-singles. And each album dropped no more than a year's time after the previous one. Prince albums used to be real events. I do miss those days.

Every since I saw the movie Prince has been the man.
Rolling Stone in 1989 rated the album as the 2nd best of the 1980's only behind London Calling by The Clash(great album but the author was smoking when he wrote that) and listed Let's Go Crazy as the theme song of the 1980's. They went on to say that the first 4 songs on the albums were greater than most artists entire careers. If you EVER doubt Purple Rain or Prince I challenge you to find the 13+ minute version of Computer Blue and listen to it. In the top ten greatest albums of all times.
