who else thinks purple rain is overrated?

Aside from the singles I grew up on, as a whole album, I really don't think it's all that!

Give me 1999, Around the World in a Day, Sign o the Times or Prince anyday over that!

I'm with ya on this one!

Altough there are songs I like, the album just doesn't do it for me anymore. I would say that this is the least likely album for me to play out of Prince's entire catalogue!

It's all opinion, but PR will never be over-rated for me, whereas SOTT has ALWAYS been over-rated. Plastic songs, attractive on first listen but easily boredom-inducing, more style than substance.

Maybe it's the unofficial nature of it, but the SOTT songs as on Dream Factory and Crystal Ball are far more appealing. Maybe because the unreleased tracks on those configurations are actually better than the 'new' songs recorded specifically for SOTT.

nah, I've said it a couple of times on here and no one has let out even a whimper of protest.

I guess I need to use more provocotive language, like 'Anyone who prefers SOTT to PR is a total ....' or summat....

When compared to the other albums that are usually considered as top classics in the the world of rock'n'roll,
it doesn't seem over-rated at all.
As a matter of fact,
seems pretty damn near perfect.

i agree with this. this album hooked me in because at the time i've never heard anything like it before and i played this album out a million times, but since that time i would rate more songs higher that those on the PR album.

I don't think Purple Rain is overrated. Aside from the singles, there are gems like the one-of-a-kind "The Beautiful Ones", the funky, sexy "Baby I'm A Star" and the weird sounding, intriguing "Darling Nikki" (which by the way had political/record industry implications for its lyrical content leading to albums stickers).

I prefer Sign O The Times over Purple Rain, but Purple Rain comes in second. Or at least top 5, even on a day I don't want to listen to it.

You mentioned 1999 - another one of his top albums. So versatile, so sexy. However, I really don't think Around The World In A Day is one of his finest moments. Aside from "Rasberry Beret" and "Pop Life", there really aren't any really rememberable tracks. But of course this is all just my opinion smile

To really see why this album is not over rated you need to be in the mind of a 17 year old experiencing this on vinyl at the time of it's release. To see how good this is try and think of how many albums have a mind blowing work of art as a side 2 track 1. Short answer, no not over rated, Beautiful Ones alone is worth the rating, let alone Doves.

This album is so not overrated.

I just popped it in recently and was pleasantly surprised at how the sound is still so fresh, there are no dated sounds on there, it could be released today and i wouldn’t know it was released more than 20 years ago.
It is Rock
Its s Pop
It is Funk
It is Indie
It is Commercial
It is Avant-garde

It is all of those things and more, contradictions and all, but it is not overrated.

Hell, time has been much kinder to Purple Rain than the almighty SOTT!
Nothing in his catalog has stood the test of time as well as this one.

I always applaud people for bringing this up. My take on this has mellowed, but I used to be one of those people who always liked Purple Rain, but only for the fact that it made him a superstar. I used to think the songs were great, but not his best work. Yet, I just heard Let's Go Crazy at my local Dollar Tree store (which is like walking back in time altogether - the Bay Area isn't as advanced as people are led to believe) and it still sounded new.

I say that, even though the album has served as an inspiration to me to write my two greatest books - also, Purple Rain makes the best use of the sexual/spiritual meld that he's so well-known for (several of the songs on the album have sexual and spiritual tones.) But a big part of what has given it the reputation of being overrated, IMHO, is just because it was so popular. Like Prince himself said, "Purple Rain and that whole scene, Like A Virgin and that whole scene, Thriller and that whole scene, that was a time period. The Beatles are never gonna capture what they did."

What? Aside from the singles you grew up on? There were 9 songs of which 6 were singles. I admit I hardly ever listen to this cd anymore, in fact I have a ton of P songs on my ipod and there are none from this album, but....everytime I go back and listen....I realize why this album is so widely heralded. Personally, Lovesexy and TRC are ranked higher to me....but PR is still the shit and is not overrated.
