Underrated gem. Only "classic" on that album. I miss the princely introspection.

This song rates right there with Dorothy Parker for me. I think there's some truth for Prince in the lyrics,"Talk of children still frightens me....what a difference a copy makes. This I one day hope to see".
Who ever said Prince has lost it - has lost it. The Kid's still got game!

Not to be too pedantic, but i think its:

Talk of children still firghtens me
Is my character enough to be
One that deserves a copy made
This I one day hope 2 see.

One of my favourite prince lyrics ever. He was so full of self doubt at this time - all that religious introspection really made him question himself.

Hey...Prince is a Father in my eyes. And Vicki Waiting is a good song. Although in the world of Prince music being ahead of it's time...I don't think she will be waiting much longer. cool

Great song. I tihnk it's a WEE bit out of place on that particular record, but it still fits. But just barely.
Maybe we can go to the movies and cry together

it's the lyrics of this verse that reflect me so well as well
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Bouncy as hell...a great slice of pop that Prince use to be able to do in his sleep but now has a little more trouble with. Strong introspective lyrics and the best song of the album IMHO.

I would give cash money to hear the extended version, if one ever existed.

nice... now I have nothing to contribute. fishslap

no, seriously, Vicky Waiting always makes my Prince mixes unless I'm consciously excluding it, lol, and this lyric is at the crux of why. When I was on the verge of fatherhood, the dang thing gave me the creeps. "is MY character enough?" eek

I often wonder how he sings it nowadays...must be extremely tough.

Okay, I think there should be clarity on lyrics or else they can be open to mis-interpretation..

And the lyrics so obviously are 'Talk of children still frightens me..'

below...

Vicki Waiting

"I'm of the mind to make some mookie.
phonebook..."

The phone rings, it's Vicki callin'
She wants me 2 come 2 the crib
She says conversation's better than being lonely
So I try my best to ad lib
I told the joke about the woman
Who asked her lover "Why is your organ so small?"
He replied "I didn't know I was playin' in a cathedral."
Vicki didn't laugh at all.

chorus:
This is where she wants 2 be
I am what she wants 2 see
I never known a love so sweet
Still I keep Vicki waiting...
Alright

All is well in Gotham City
The sound of terror is all U hear
Sometimes a pistol takes the place of her body
Sometimes her body's here
But U see when crime is your only love
All that matter is the present, the here and now
People, people, whatever floats this joker's boat
Is whatever this joker will bang

chorus

Oh yeah

Talk of children still frightens me
Is my character enough 2 be
One that deserves a copy made?
This I one day, hope 2 see
Until then she's held at bay
By my animal-like persistence
Or maybe she's just 2 proud 2 say
That fate (fate) brought us together
And this is where she wants 2 stay

chorus

chorus

All is well in Gotham town
This is where she wants 2 be
I am what she wants 2 see
I've never known a love so sweet
Still I keep Vicki
Still I keep Vicki
Still I keep Vicki waiting (waiting)
Aha aha

Still I keep Vicki
Still I keep Vicki waiting

This is where she wants 2 be
Shut up already, damn.

'Vicki Waiting' is my favorite song on the "Batman" soundtrack.

I can write a psychology thesis on Prince's thoughts of monogamy, children, and violence based off this one song.
