Raspberry Beret was written while Dez was still in the band. Watching the DVD "Prince: The Glory Years - A Documentary Review" there is an interview with Dez and he says that Raspberry Beret was written while he was still in the band.
I did not know that. I thought it was written much later on like early to mid 1984 after Wendy had joined the band. Dez says he remembers Prince working on the chord progressions in the back of the tour bus while he was still in the band (the 1999 tour I'm assuming). "Always blessings, never losses......"

It must have sounded substantially different b/c the "Raspberry Beret" on ATWIAD has lots of non-rock n roll instruments on it (cello, violin, etc) and Prince wasn't using such instrumentation in 1982. Plus, didn't Lisa and Wendy help with that song for ATWIAD. the music knows what your motives are when you are making it

According to princeinfo.net the first version or Raspberry Beret was recorded in spring/summer 82, http://www.princeinfo.net...201982.htm
Raspberry Beret Date: Spring-Summer 1982 Timing: Remark: Version 1 Performer: Prince Composer: Prince Studio: Home Studio, Minneapolis - other songs later released that had their first early versions recorded around this time were: New Position, Strange Relationship, I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man, and Mia Bocca And the 2nd version (the released version) was recorded in August 84 - same month as Screams Of Passion (19/8) and God (20/8) http://www.princeinfo.net...4/Aro.html Raspberry Beret Date: August1984 Timing: 03:31 Remark: Version 2 Performer: Prince/Lisa Coleman/Wendy Melvoin/David Coleman/Suzi Katayama/Novi Novog Composer: Prince/Wendy Melvoin/Lisa Coleman Studio: Flying Cloud Drive Warehouse, Eden Prairie Released on: Around The World In A Day (1985) So no doubt that while the basic chord structure/heart of the song would've been what was recorded in the original version, the 2nd version recorded would've been 'dressed up' instrument-wise considerably to suit the vibe he was going for with ATWIAD .
